Simplicity Day - July 12, 2023

DIANE'S CORNER ..
Celebrate Simplicity Day

We live in a complicated world, with taxes and devices and every imaginable complication the world can provide. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just take some time to keep things simple? To winnow life down to the bare essentials and hold onto it like the precious thing it is? National Simplicity Day encourages you to do just that, to let go of all of life’s complications and live a day… simple.

History of National Simplicity Day

National Simplicity Day was born out of a need to be free from the complications of the world and to allow ourselves to just be simple. Celebrate life through simplicity by turning off your devices, getting rid of complicated things and just let life be about living for a day.

One of the great conundrums of the modern world is that the more opportunities and options you have the less happy you’re going to be. Some of the happiest people in the world have been determined to be those who live in uncivilized areas concerning themselves only with what they’re going to eat that day and where a good place to sleep is.

We can learn much from them, though few of us would want to go to such extremes. However, we can all benefit from just cutting out the things that make our lives difficult. National Simplicity Day is about getting rid of these complications and culling from your life what doesn’t bring you joy.

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY
Before they called it Google, co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were using the name "Backrub" for their newfound search engine.

Each of the three sneezes has a purpose. The first one loosens up the irritant. The second sneeze bring the irritant to the front of the nose. The third and final one, lets it all out.

There are nearly 400 people named "ABCDE" in the United States.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

The large red damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula) is a species of damselfly belonging to the family Coenagrionidae. Found mainly in Europe, with some populations also in northern Africa and western Asia, it inhabits small ponds, lakes and dikes, and occasionally slow-moving rivers. Large red damselflies have black legs and wing spots in both sexes, and can reach a body length of 33 to 36 millimetres (1.3 to 1.4 in). They are often the first damselflies to emerge in the spring, usually in April or May, and adults can be found until September in some localities. This female large red damselfly was photographed on Cumnor Hill in Oxfordshire, England. It is of the form fulvipes, one of three colour forms for the species.

FUN  thanks, Nora
You have to find the odd ones out in the groups of words. BUT WAIT! There's a catch. Each group of words has TWO words which do not belong. Can you find them both?

EXAMPLE:

Lily - Jane - Tulip - Rose

Jane does not belong as it's the only one which is not a flower.

Tulip also does not belong because it's the only one which is not a girl's name.

You're on your own for the rest!

1. Dodge - Ford - Lincoln - Hoover

2. King - Earl - Knight - Bishop

3. Yellow - Green - Dead - Black

Answer

1. Hoover does not belong as it's the only one which is not a car manufacturer. Dodge does not belong as it's the only one which is not the last name of a President of USA.

2. Bishop does not belong as it's the only one which is not a class of nobility. Earl does not belong as it's the only one which is not a Chess piece.

3. Dead does not belong as it's the only one which is not a color. Green does not belong as it's the only one which is not the name of a sea.

ICE BREAKER  thanks, Kris

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a report, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you'll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
Everything you've learned in school as "obvious" becomes less and less obvious as you begin to study the universe. For example, there are no solids in the universe. There's not even a suggestion of a solid. There are no absolute continuums. There are no surfaces. There are no straight lines. -R. Buckminster Fuller, engineer, designer, and architect (12 Jul 1895-1983)
