Make a Hat Day - September 15, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Make a Hat Day

You know you’ve always wanted to let your inner milliner shine and what better way to do so than celebrating Make a Hat Day? This is the day when anyone and everyone can express their creativity and artistic skills through the creation of some fantastic head wear to delight and amaze. Whether you style a hat for your own use, or make one to give to a friend or sell for charity, Make a Hat Day gives you the reason you need to make something wonderful.

Playgroups or school classes may celebrate Make a Hat Day by facilitating a hat creation session. Craft clubs and social groups may also want to do something a little different and make some hats. It’s also an opportunity to produce headgear gifts or even hats to sell. However you want to mark it, Make a Hat Day is a fantastic chance to have fun.

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, September 15

Artistic talent is strong with this birthday. As grounded as you are, now and again, you face deep changes that force you to let go and then reinvent yourself. Your experiences in life bring greater awareness and heightened intuition. You have strong sex appeal and are highly attracted to romantic relationships. You draw others to you for advice, help, and comfort. Your intuition is well-developed, and so is your imagination, which seems to know no bounds. You’re a bit of a maverick. Although sensitive, you are not afraid to do your own thing. Famous people born today:

1254 Marco Polo, Italian explorer (Il Milione), born in Venice, Venetian Republic (d. 1324)

1789 James Fenimore Cooper, 1st major American novelist (The Last of the Mohicans), born in Burlington, New Jersey (d. 1851)

1857 William Howard Taft, 27th US President (Republican: 1909-13) and Chief Justice, born in Cincinnati, Ohio (d. 1930)

1890 Agatha Christie, English crime writer (Murder on the Orient Express), born in Torquay, Devon (d. 1976)

1909 Jean Batten, New Zealand aviator (first-ever solo flight from England to New Zealand in 1936), born in Rotorua, New Zealand (d. 1982)

1984 Prince Harry [Henry Charles Albert David Windsor], Prince of Wales, 6th in British succession, born in London, England

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

Istanbul has vending machines that dispense food and water for stray animals when you insert a plastic bottle. They feed an estimated 150,000 strays throughout the city.

Initially, monkeys were supposed to be used in the 1984 film "Gremlins," but the test monkey panicked when production put a mask on him. He then ran around the editing room, screaming and pooping everywhere.

Theodore Roosevelt was the only U.S. president to have a confirmed tattoo on his body. He had a tattoo of his family crest on his chest.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

The red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) is a carnivorous passerine bird and a member of the shrike family, Laniidae. It breeds in a range stretching from western Europe eastwards to central Russia, and it overwinters in the eastern areas of tropical and southern Africa. About 17 centimetres (7 inches) in length, it feeds on large insects, small birdsfrogsrodents and lizards. Like other shrikes, it hunts from prominent perches, and impales corpses on thorns or barbed wire as a "larder". This male red-backed shrike was photographed at Lake Kerkini in northern Greece.

ICE BREAKER
thanks, Kris
You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a rapport, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you’ll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.
