Book Lovers Day - August 9, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Book Lovers Day

From the scent of a rare first edition book found in an old time book collection, to a crisp, fresh book at the local supermarket, the very sight of a book can bring back memories. Reading as a child, enjoying the short stories, the long books and the ability to lose yourself in a story so powerful that at the end your asking yourself where to get the next book in the series. This is for the reader in all of us, the celebration of Book Lovers Day!

History of Book Lovers Day

While the day’s origins may be shrouded in mystery and rumor, the books themselves are not. Started from carving on stone tablets, the book was designed to make portable the writings and drawings of those that could not carry around stone tablets. Originally it was parchment or vellum (calf skin, in case you were wondering)was bound tightly with a wooden cover.

Often the wooden cover was tightly wrapped in leather to prevent the wood from getting wet and had clasps or straps to hold it shut. In the more modern age, printing capabilities made books cheaper, and easier, to print. The printing press, the typewriter, and the computer all had an effect on the market of books.

But more so than most, is the upsurge in electronic devices that can be used to read on. Computers, tablets, and most cell phones now have the ability to read books, making it that much easier to carry around a small library to enjoy not matter where you are.

JOKE OF THE DAY

thanks for 'a child's opinion,' of the elderly, Bev
While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs.

One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, 'The tooth fairy
will never believe this!'

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, August 9:

Although your personality is restless, you are at your best when meeting your responsibilities and filling commitments. Self-esteem plummets otherwise. You are hard-working, likable, dependable, and achievement-oriented. Some of you are overachievers. You might often find yourself in the position of managing and taking care of others. You have a very responsible streak and might stay in difficult situations longer than most as a result – watch for over-committing yourself. Because pride and protectiveness can keep you from sharing your worries and concerns with people closest to you, it can be very important for you to find a confidante so that you can share some of your burdens. Making more time for pleasure is also essential to your success. In close relationships, control or imbalance can be issues, but relationships get much better later in life. You are deeply loving and have strong personal magnetism. Famous people born today:

1648 Johann Michael Bach, German composer (In Dulci Jubilo), born in Arnstadt, Germany (d. 1694)

1776 Amedeo Avogadro, Italian scientist who contributed to molecular theory, including what is known as Avogadro's law (6.022 x 10 ^ 23), born in Torino, Italy (d. 1856)

1914 Tove Jansson, Finnish author and illustrator (Moomins), born in Helsinki, Grand Duchy of Finland, Russian Empire (d. 2001)

1950 Chris Haney, Canadian journalist who created the board game "Trivial Pursuit", born in Welland, Ontario (d. 2010)

1963 Whitney Houston, American singer ("I Will Always Love You"; "I Wanna Dance With Somebody"), actress (The Bodyguard), and film producer (The Princess Diaries)born in Newark, New Jersey (d. 2012)

1967 Deion Sanders, American College/Pro Football Hall of Fame corner-back (Super Bowl 1995, 96; 8 x Pro Bowl; Dallas Cowboys) and MLB outfielder (NY Yankees; Atlanta Braves), born in Fort Myers, Florida

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

When FDR asked comedian Eddie Cantor if he could get a million people to donate a dollar to fund polio research, Cantor said it would be better to request dimes. Heeding his advice, the White House received 2.68 million dimes in less than
a month ($268k), launching the "March of Dimes".

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Portrait of Wally is a 1912 oil-on-canvas painting by the Austrian

artist Egon Schiele, depicting the young model Walburga Neuzil.

Although little is known of the subject, she might have been one

of his mistresses, and died tragically at a very young age. The

painting had been owned by Lea Bondi, a Jewish art dealer who

was fleeing the German annexation of Austria and had to sell it

in 1939. Restituted to the owners only in 2010, the work now forms

part of the collection of the Leopold Museum in Vienna.

Dogs LOVE to Chew.
How much they like to chew is different for every dog…But gnawing away on things can actually be great for your dog’s mental and physical health.

Chewing can help:
Reduce bad behaviors caused by boredom
Clean your dog’s teeth
Boost your dog’s mood, because the act of chewing can release happy hormones like dopamine in your dog’s brain.
It’s no wonder the dog chew market is a MASSIVE, billion-dollar industry…

But not ALL dog chews you’ll see in stores are good for your pup, no matter what their flashy packaging says. So here are my top 3 dog chew “do’s and don’ts”…

DON’T — Smoked or seasoned meaty bones

Bones can splinter (even raw smoked bones) and the seasonings and preservatives used on the outside can cause digestive issues for your pup. Not to mention, these chews can give your pup seriously stinky breath and gas.

DO — A frozen celery stick with almond butter. Wash a fresh celery stick and fill the crease with almond butter. Freeze the stick overnight and then give it to your pup. Not only is this a great chew for them, but the celery can actually help freshen your dog’s breath.

DON’T — Whole, unsplit deer and elk antlers. When these antlers are dried whole (not split lengthwise to reveal the softer interior) they can become hard as rocks. Unsplit antlers have been known to cause serious dental problems, including cracked teeth and cuts inside the mouth.

DO — A frozen, salty, raw carrot. Wash a whole carrot, but don’t worry about peeling. Add a teaspoon of salt to 12oz of warm water. Allow the salt to dissolve, then dip the carrot in the solution. Remove and freeze it overnight. The next day your pup will have a savory-sweet chew! The hint of salt will tickle your pup’s tastebuds and the frozen-solid sweet carrot will be a fun and challenging chew, even for “power chewers.” NOTE: Just do a quick dip in lightly salted water. Don’t soak or otherwise season the carrot, as this could upset your dog’s tummy.

DON’T — Rawhide bones and strips. This chemical-dipped leather is not a good chew toy for your dog. Not only is it bathed in toxic chemicals…But large chunks of raw hide can easily be swallowed and cause choking, intestinal blockages, and other serious health problems for your dog.

DO — Oven-dried sweet potato and apple slices. Simply bake slices of apples and sweet potatoes at 250º F for 3 hours in the oven. These will turn out tough as leather, but they’re healthier, tastier, and easy for your dog to digest.

Plus, you can get creative and make your own twists or rolled up sticks with apple and sweet potato slices.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
What magical trick makes us intelligent? The trick is that there is no trick. The power of intelligence stems from our vast diversity, not from any single, perfect principle. -Marvin Minsky, scientist and author (9 Aug 1927-2016)
