Join Hands Day - May 4, 2019

DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate Join Hands Day

While you might think that Join Hands Day is all about shaking the hands of strangers you meet in the street, it is in fact a day dedicated to attempting a union in our communities between the older generation and the younger generation. In the world where youths are persecuted, and the elderly are presented as weak and frail, this day truly brings communities together to recognise the various ways in which we all aid each other.
Many communities across the world will use Join Hands Day to start a dialogue between the old and the young, hoping to plant a seed of communication which can exist for years to come. If you want to get involved try paying a visit to a community centre or elderly home, and show that regardless of age we are all humans who need to be appreciated and loved.

Irish visual artist threadstories crafts wearable textile masks that are often full-coverage, obscuring her face with layers of multi-colored yarn. The works are made with traditional techniques, and inspired by everything from the art of basketweaving to Francis Bacon’s distorted figurative paintings. Each work begins with a crocheted balaclava which the artist uses as a base to attach each segment of material.

Basaltic Prisms of Santa María Regla
The Basaltic Prisms of Santa María Regla are tall columns of basalt near Huasca de Ocampo in the Mexican state of Hidalgo, lining a ravine through which water runs from the San Antonio Dam. The walls of the canyon, called the Barranca de Alcholoya, are lined by polygonal columns between 30 and 50 metres (98 and 164 ft) high, with five or six sides each. The basalt columns were created by the slow cooling of volcanic lava. There are two waterfalls at the site. The canyon has been improved by the addition of stairs, walkways and hanging bridges for easier access.
