DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Son and Daughter Day
Image result for Son and Daughter gif
Son and Daughter Day is the perfect opportunity to set aside some time to reflect on the joy that children bring to your life. Whether sons and daughters are young or old, teenagers or toddlers, the bond between parent and child is like no other on earth and this annual celebration ensures the miracle of bringing new life into the world is never forgotten. Though the origins of Son and Daughter Day are unknown, it is celebrated widely across the world simply by parents letting them know how special they are to them.

thanks for the Phyllis Diller funnies, Barbara

History

Mayan Long Count Calendar Begins (3114 BCE)

Image result for Mayan Long Count Calendar Begins (3114 BCE)
The Long Count is one of the various ancient Mayan calendars that maintained complicated, cyclical measurements of time. It was intended to provide an accurate record of historical events and counts the days elapsed from a fixed starting point—calculated as August 11, 3114 BCE, the date of creation according to the Maya. Some believe that the calendar predicts the world's end on December 21, 2012, but scholars have widely rejected this claim.

His biggest success was 1976's Roots, a Pulitzer Prize-winning history of his ancestors beginning with their enslavement. A television adaptation became one of the most-watched programs in America, spurring interest in genealogy.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, August 11
You have a rare, balanced combination of logic and intuition. Your people skills help bring success into your life, and partnering up tends to also attract positive experiences into your life. You are a rather ambitious person who is likely to be quite successful and not financially wanting, as you value security, both in your career and your love life. You are attracted to, or you attract, successful and strong people as romantic partners. Togetherness and partnership are more important to you than personal glory. Sales, promotion, and public relations are strong for you. While routine and structure are important to your happiness, you should watch for falling into ruts. In relationships, you may stay longer than most in a difficult set-up. You have staying power, however, and this can serve you well. This can also translate literally as a long life and good health overall. Famous people born today: Alex Haley, Hulk Hogan, Jerry Falwell, Anna Gunn, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Messina.

TEN THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW ABOUT KNITTING
theyarnloop
1) You burn an amazing 55 calories by knitting for half an hour! So those long knitting sessions ARE good for you after all – we knew it!

2) David Babcock entered the Guinness World Record when he finished the Kansas City marathon in 5 hours 48 minutes 27 seconds – all while knitting a scarf measuring 12 feet, 1¾ inches long! The previous Guinness World Record holder was Britain’s Susie Hewer.

3) Queen Victoria was a keen knitter until her death.

4) The word knit is derived from the Old English cnyttan, which means 'to knot'.
5) The record for the most people knitting simultaneously took place September 2012 in London's Royal Albert Hall, when 3,083 people knitted together for 15 minutes!

6) The world’s fastest knitter is Miriam Tegels of the Netherlands. Believe it or not, she can hand knit 118 stitches in one minute!

7) Knitting was initially a male-only occupation. The first knitting union was founded in Paris in 1527, and women weren't allowed to attend.
8) In the 1350s, knitting Madonnas began to appear in Europe, depicting the Virgin Mary knitting – these include The Madonna Knitting Christ’s Seamless Garment, c. 1400-1410
na
9) Published in 1611 by Johann Siebmacher, the first ever knitting book contained 126 pages of charts, painstakingly filled in by hand!

10) No one knows how old knitting really is, but one of the earliest known examples of knitting was a pair of socks found in Egypt dating from the first millennium A.D.10. We wouldn't like to take a whiff of those...!

About Me

My photo
diane
I came up with the idea of DIANE'S CORNER because I wanted to do something for the community in which I feel comforted and alive! Before retirement, I was a volunteer director of organizations, placing thousands of volunteers into more than 25 community services, everything from feeding the hungry to visiting AIDS patients abandoned in hospitals.Through seeing the volunteers' hard work and devotion, my life was deeply touched. It is through my dedication to bringing a moment of sweet relaxation to knitters and crocheters lives that I produce DIANE'S CORNER.
