War Orphans Day - January 6, 2023

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate War Orphans Day

Each year, war makes orphans of many children all over the globe. In fact, UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) estimates that approximately 150 million children worldwide are orphans, and many of these are due to deaths caused by war.

The World Day for War Orphans is observed each year as a time to raise awareness about the plight of these children, and also to find opportunities to provide them with resources to help overcome this trauma.

History of World Day for War Orphans

In modern times, the problem of war has become more and more impactful on the lives of civilians all over the world. Children are particularly vulnerable and at risk when the violence of governments and war spills over into the lives of average citizens. Today, millions of children are without parents due to war. They need help to not only survive but to find healing from the trauma that has so negatively impacted their lives.

An annual observance, the World Day for War Orphans was established by the French organization, SOS Enfants En Détresse (SOS Children in Need). As many children are part of the number of displaced persons each year, they are at extremely high risk for suffering from problems such as hunger, homelessness and disease.

World Day for War Orphans is a time to share the burden, raise awareness and get involved by helping, even on a small scale.

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY
In England, to leave a party without saying goodbye is called a 'French exit.' In France, it's an 'English exit.' In the US, it's an 'Irish goodbye'

When stagecoaches were standard in the 1880s, the driver would typically assign his passenger seat to an armed partner whose duty it was to keep thieves away. Hence, the expression "riding shotgun".

Scientists estimate that there's enough gold on the seafloor to give every person alive nine pounds.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Hip, Hip, Hurrah! is an oil-on-canvas painting from 1888 by the Danish painter Peder Severin Krøyer. The work shows various members of the Skagen Painters, a group of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish artists who formed a loose community in Skagen, at the northern tip of Jutland, in the 1880s and early 1890s. Krøyer began the painting in 1884 after a party at Michael Ancher's house, with the composition inspired by photographs taken at the celebration by the German artist Fritz Stoltenberg, although the individuals featured are not all the same. A dispute arose between Krøyer and Ancher the following day when the former returned uninvited to continue work on the piece, and although they reconciled Krøyer was not permitted to use Ancher's garden as the setting. The Swedish art collector Pontus Fürstenberg bought the painting before it was completed, and it was displayed at Charlottenborg in 1888. He later donated the work to the Gothenburg Museum of Art, where it has hung since.

Disneyland in Anaheim, CA was being built, developed and expanding and Walt Disney knew he needed, (and wanted) to be at Disneyland… so he built for himself and his wife Lillian a suitable apartment.
What you might not know was that Disney’s apartment at Disneyland was built over the Main Street Fire station.

Walt Disney was a really big fan of the Fire Service, huge in fact. Walt and his wife Lillian Disney also loved the Victorian Era.
So after the fire station apartment was built Walt had his Oscar-winning Set Designer decorate the apartment in Victorian period and in cranberry red… Walt’s favorite time period and color.

Walt even had an authentic brass slide pole installed from his sleeping quarters closest to the fire apparatus floor.
For many years Disney’s family, friends and honored guests took part in riding down the fire pole… imagining their own early century fire emergency response.
Disney’s Main Street Fire Station Apartment was a mainstay of The Disney’s life.

His routine would be to walk the park before it opened and have breakfast at Aunt Jemima's Pancakes. He’d then in the privacy of his apartment admire the guests arriving and entering through Main Street.
Whenever Walt was in quarters he would turn the light on in the window facing Main Street to signal to all who were aware that Walt was in residence.
Today the apartment above the fire station has remained much of how Mr and Mrs Disney left it… and the light in the window still left on, illuminating the window.

So the next time you’re at Disneyland, look at the window above the fire station apparatus door… they leave his light on all the time now signifying that Walt’s spirit is still in residence.

today's generation be like.....

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
The lights of stars that were extinguished ages ago still reach us. So it is with great men who died centuries ago, but still reach us with the radiations of their personalities. -Kahlil Gibran, poet and artist (6 Jan 1883-1931)
