World Animal Day - October 4, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate World Animal Day

While he may be rolling in his grave to discover that he was not the first person to be able to talk to animals, Doctor Doolittle would almost certainly be a keen advocate of World Animal Day which takes place on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, October 4th. Started in 1931 in Italy, this annual celebration of all things furry is now a popular day in which we remember the important role that animals have to play in our world, as well as the people who devote their lives working to protect and care for them. To get into the festive mood on October 4th you are encouraged to ditch the fur fabrics, refuse to buy products tested on animals and – probably of greater concern to the majority of folk – convert to vegetarianism.

Isn't this the most adorable little cloud?

Say what now?

WORD OF THE DAY

chosisme

MEANING:
noun: A literary style which focuses on description of objects, not on interpretation, plot, characterization, etc.

ETYMOLOGY:
From French, from chose (thing), from Latin causa (case, thing). The idea is associated with the writer and filmmaker Alain Robbe-Grillet. Earliest documented use: 1960s.

USAGE:
“‘How are things?’ someone asks the author at a party. That sets him off. How are things? You mean, in what way do things exist? How should I know? What, even, is a thing? I’d better write a book about it. And so he does: a book of short meditations on everyday objects, a contemporary exercise in happy chosisme.”
Steven Poole; How Are Things?; The Guardian (London, UK); Nov 5, 2005.

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, October 4:

Overall a responsible and practical person, you are not, however, a stick in the mud. Your interests are many and varied, and you are skilled at presenting your ideas to others in a unique way. You are both an interesting and interested person, always learning, ever curious, but also rather stubborn when it comes to your ideas and opinions. Under pressure, you might feel the need to make up stories, as your reputation is important to you, and you instinctively fear misrepresentation. Your slow yet steady approach to achieving your goals assures you success, even if it doesn’t come early. Your ideas are ahead of their time, and others tend to respect your advice. Famous people born today:

1822 Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th US President (Republican: 1877-81), born in Delaware, Ohio (d. 1893)

1880 Damon Runyon, American journalist and writer (Guys & Dolls-based on his work), born in Manhattan, Kansas (d. 1946)

1923 Charlton Heston [John Carter], American actor (The Ten Commandments; Ben-Hur; Planet of Apes), born in Wilmette, Illinois, (d. 2008)

1941 Anne Riceauthor (Interview with a Vampire), born in New Orleans, Louisiana

1946 Susan Sarandon, American actress (Dead Man Walking, The Client) also known for her social and political activism, born in Queens, New York

PICTURES OF THE DAY

The black skimmer (Rynchops niger) is a tern-like bird in the gull family Laridae, breeding in North and South America. Skimmers have the lower mandible (jawbone) and bill longer than the upper ones, which allows them to fly low over the water surface, skimming the water for small fish, insects, crustaceans and molluscs. This black skimmer was photographed fishing while in flight over the Rio Negro in the Pantanal, an area of tropical wetland in southwestern Brazil.

Looking for love
Accentuating his mature appearance with pastel colours, protruding lips and an outstanding pink forehead, this Asian sheepshead wrasse sets out to impress females and see off rivals, which he will head-butt and bite, near Japan’s remote Sado Island. Individuals start out as females, and when they reach a certain age and size – up to a metre (more than 3 feet) long – can transform into males. Long-lived and slow-growing, the species is intrinsically vulnerable to overfishing.

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a rapport, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you’ll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
The unrestricted competition so commonly advocated does not leave us the survival of the fittest. The unscrupulous succeed best in accumulating wealth. -Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th US president (4 Oct 1822-1893)
