Concussion Awareness Day - September 17, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Concussion Awareness Day

Is it just a bump on the head right? It’s all part of the game and it’s not like its bleeding! You feel fine! And weren’t you wearing a helmet? Or it was just grassed right? How hard could the ground really be?

How much damage can a soccer ball really do? It’s round and full of air! The truth of the matter is that a concussion can be a serious issue, and they tend to happen during sports more than any other time. Concussion Awareness Day reminds you to learn the signs, and take them seriously. Concussions are serious business!

History of Concussion Awareness Day

Concussions stand out as the single most common type of traumatic brain injury and is known by many names in the medical industry. None of them sound good, mild brain injury, mild traumatic brain injury, minor head trauma, not a thing any of us want to see listed on our medical report.

Our brains, after all, are us. Treatment is simple enough, you just have to chill out and rest both your body and your mind, which means no video games, no texting, and no school work. No, this isn’t a good way to get out of taking that final, Concussions can have some serious repercussions.

So Concussion Awareness Day is a chance to help yourself and others by learning how to identify the signs of a concussion and what to do in the event that someone you know sustains one, or you suspect they may have. As mentioned above, concussions are particularly common amongst those who engage in active sports, especially American Football and Boxing.

JOKE OF THE DAY
This bear walks into a bar. Then he sits down and orders a beer.
The bartender, amazed that this bear can actually talk, gives him a beer.
The bear says, "What do I owe you?"
The bartender stops and thinks for a moment."Even though this bear is smart," thinks the bartender, "he probably hasn’t been in many bars."
So the bartender says, "That'll be ten dollars."
The bear forks over the money and starts drinking his beer.
After a few minutes, the bartender can't restrain his curiosity, so he walks back over to the bear and tries to strike up a conversation.
"You know, we don't get many bears in this bar."
The bear looks up from his beer and says, "Well, at ten bucks a beer, I'm not surprised."

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, September 17:

You’re a very practical person, yet also attuned to spiritual values. You expect a lot from others, but even more from yourself. The tendency to be controlling should be watched, as well as the tendency to be overly controlled, guarded and self-contained. You are very hardworking and have amazing organizational skills. You are also extremely helpful to others and have a unique sense of humor. You could find much success in intellectual pursuits. You dream big dreams, and sometimes are quite discontented with everyday realities. Even so, you can be somewhat skeptical, simply because your mind is highly analytical. Famous people born today:

1743 Marie Jean Antoine Nicolas de Caritat, Marquis de Condorcet, French enlightenment philosopher (Condorcet Method) and mathematician, born in Ribemont, Picardy, France (d. 1794)

1923 Hank Williams, American country singer (Cold, Cold Heart, Hey Good Lookin'), born in Mount Olive, Alabama (d. 1953)

1931 Anne Bancroft [Anna Italiano], American actress, director, screenwriter and singer (Graduate, Miracle Worker), born in The Bronx, New York (d. 2005)

1969 Keith Flint, English singer, musician and dancer (Prodigy), born in London, England (d. 2019)

1995 Patrick Mahomes, American NFL quarterback (Super Bowl MVP 2020; KC Chiefs), born in Tyler, Texas

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

Charles Lightoller, the second officer of the Titanic, stayed onboard until the end and became trapped underwater until a boiler explosion set him free; allowing his escape. 28 years later, at the age of 66, he volunteered in WW2 and helped save 122 men from Dunkirk.

Nathan "Nearest" Green, a man born into slavery and emancipated after the Civil War, taught distilling techniques to Jack Daniel, founder of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey. He was hired as the company’s first master distiller upon its
creation.

Coronavirus Style by Sylvia, CAN DO Correspondent

I am 83 years old and I was in the McDonald’s drive-through this morning and the young lady behind me leaned on her horn and started mouthing something because I was taking too long to place my order. So when I got to the first window I paid for her order along with my own.

The cashier must have told her what I'd done, because as we moved up she leaned out her window and waved to me and mouthed "Thank you.", obviously embarrassed that I had repaid her rudeness with kindness.

When I got to the second window I showed them both receipts and took her food too. Now she has to go back to the end of the queue and start all over again.

Don't blow your horn at old people, they have been around a long time.

Kew Gardens is a botanic garden in southwest London. Founded

in 1840, its living collections include some 27,000 taxa while the

herbarium houses over 8.5 million preserved plant and fungal

specimens. This photograph shows the Davies Alpine House,

which opened in 2006. The design of the greenhouse encourages

natural airflow, the automatically operated blinds prevent overheating,

and the glass is of a special type that allows maximum transmission

of ultraviolet light. The structure houses a collection of alpine plants

that grow above the tree line in their localities of origin.

I am only a head,
I have nothing within,
I have no mouth,
But speak through my skin.

What am I?

answer:

A drum. Drums consist of a drumhead (the part of the drum you beat) over a hollow space, and are traditionally made with animal skin.

Paper Towel Tube Letter Matching

You need:
a paper towel or toilet paper tube
letter stickers (I got these at the Target dollar spot awhile ago but any set you have on hand will work.)

How it works:
Have your child match each letter with the corresponding sticker by placing the sticker on top of the letter on the tube.

Once again I got so excited that I think I got a little carried away by putting both upper and lowercase letters, A-Z, on the tube. I'm thinking it might have been too much for him because we matched up a few together and then B started doing something else with the stickers. I think next time I will use a toilet paper tube because it is smaller and only have about 10 letters on it at a time.
