Celiac Awareness Day - September 13, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Celiac Awareness Day

If you’re a lover of grains and light breads, cereals, and pastries, then you have a life deeply steeped in gluten. Throughout the world, this includes most people as bread has been, in all its forms, one of the foundational ingredients in most cultures diets. Celiac Awareness Day was developed to raise awareness of the condition that makes the consumption of gluten a painful and harrowing experience, and the millions of people who experience it.

History Of Celiac Awareness Day

Celiac Awareness Day was developed by the United States Senate to raise awareness of this condition, stating in their resolution that we all “should become more informed and aware of celiac disease.” Celiac disease was first discovered by Samuel Gee in 1888, a pediatrician who recognized that the symptoms he was observing were all tied to the diet of his patients. In honor of this man and the lives that he has helped to make better through awareness and education about this disease, his birthday was selected as the yearly celebration for Celiac Awareness Day.

Celiac disease affects the lower intestine and occurs in those who have a genetic predisposition to the condition. The disease is a result as part of a reaction to gluten, a protein found primarily in grains like barley, wheat, and rye. While it can persist into adulthood, it is most common among those aged six months to two years, and in these patients can cause serious issues due to poor nutrient absorption, often causing anemia. For all sufferers of Celiac disease, the only treatment is a lifelong diet free from gluten.

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, September 13

Extremely creative, you are also able to turn your creations into something practical. A born entrepreneur, you seem to have endless new ideas. It's best to watch a tendency to over-analyze your relationships. You are fully capable of taking the lead; nevertheless, you enjoy serving in some manner, whether it's through teaching or simply finding joy in attending to others' needs. You are clever, witty, and your sense of humor is mischievous. Sarcasm comes easily to you, but be careful it's not too biting. Overall, you have the feeling that you can win others over with your wit, and you usually can! Your ability to solve problems is next to none. Famous people born today:

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

In 1719, prisoners in Paris were offered freedom as long as they were willing to marry a prostitute and move to Louisiana.

Your head ages more quickly than your feet. Your feet are closer to the center of the Earth's gravitational field, where time moves slightly slower.

About 16.4 million Americans believe chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

Upholstery & Mattress Spray Cleaner
  • 150ml plain shampoo
  • 150ml alcohol
  • 90ml hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 L water

In a bucket add water, shampoo, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and mix. Transfer everything to a PET bottle using a funnel. If putting into a spray bottle, do not close the bottle for 5 hours, to get rid of oxygenation or the bottle may burst.

To apply to a mattress, use a brush to scrub it and then wipe down with a dry cloth. This can also be used on upholstery. The alcohol helps in it quickly drying, while helping to eliminate dust mites and bacteria.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Aglianico is a red wine grape grown in the Campania and Basilicata regions of Italy. It has also recently been planted in Australia, where it thrives in a predominantly sunny climate. The grape is believed to have originated in Greece, and was introduced to Italy by the Phoenicians. The name is in fact a corruption of 'Ellenico' the Italian word for 'Greek'.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
Much of writing might be described as mental pregnancy with successive difficult deliveries. -J.B. Priestley, author (13 Sep 1894-1984)

OPTICAL ILLUSION
This boat looks like it’s floating in the air, but it’s really just floating on water. The reason this illusion works is because of how crystal clear the water is. You can see straight to the bottom, where the shadow lurks.
Because of this, the shadow looks like it’s at the top of the water, with the boat floating above it. We promise boats don’t fly though. Just look at the person at the end of the boat dangling their legs in the water for proof!
