Daffodil Day - August 27, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER .. Celebrate Daffodil Day

Daffodils are a flower that have been symbolically linked to the fight against cancer for many years, now. Representing “hope” in the language of flowers, they stand for all the efforts of communities and volunteer groups in the search for a cure

As such, Daffodil Day is a day when we’re reminded of all that hard work and research, and encouraged to do what we can to help it. From selling those all-important daffodils to raising awareness in the community of fundraising efforts, it’s a day for everyone to lend their help to a very important cause.

History of Daffodil Day

As the first flower to bloom in Spring, daffodils quickly became a symbol of hope when cancer societies started using the flower in the 1950s. The image became iconic, forever tied to the efforts of volunteers, researchers, and those who wanted to raise awareness ever since.

After they were first used, daffodils became the logo of cancer societies and volunteering groups around the world. Since the 1950s, we have learned more and more about the disease, including the fact that nearly 4 in 10 people will have a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.

As such, cancer societies and awareness groups grew as we learned how to both prevent and detect cancer. From self-examinations to avoiding risks like exposing skin directly to sunlight, Daffodil Days have played an important role in helping people understand the threat of cancer and what they can do to fight it.

Daffodil Day has also grown to become an important fundraising day for cancer societies around the globe. Funds are raised for all kinds of purposes, to contribute to cancer research, to ensure that those diagnosed with it have resources and support groups to help them live with it, and to help cancer societies spread their message even further.

Nowadays, Daffodil Days happen around the world, often in conjunction with the first bloom of those flowers that have become so emblematic of the fight.

Senior Logic...

I went to the liquor store Tuesday afternoon on my bicycle, bought a bottle of Crown Royal, and put it in the bicycle basket.

As I was about to leave, I thought to myself: if I fall off the bicycle, the bottle will break. So I drank all the Crown Royal before I went home.

It turned out to be a very good decision, because I fell off my bicycle 7 times on the way home.

Born in Brescia, at age 15, Lattanzio Gambara (c. 1530 – 1574) was initially apprenticed to Giulio Campi in Cremona, in 1549, working alongside Girolamo Romanino, who became his father-in-law.

During the last few years, after decorating the drum of the dome of Santa Maria da Steccata in Parma, Gambara executed several other frescoes for palaces in Brescia and Parma, including a Testimonial (1568) for the church of San Pietro al Po in Cremona. He fell from a scaffold, dying before finishing the frescoes on the dome of S. Lorenzo in Brescia.

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, August 27

You are emotional and sensitive, sometimes to the point of drama, but the people around you love you for it. In fact, you can achieve the greatest success when you can express your creativity and sense of drama in your line of work. Strong emotions can trip you up at times, but if channeled well, they can lead to great success. You can sometimes be a “mother hen,” caring for others and worrying that they’re safe and happy. Loving, passionate, and warm, life would be dull indeed without you! Even so, you can be difficult to know at times, possibly because you wear your feelings on your face, and they are not always indicative of reactions to the company you’re keeping, but instead, they’re more in line with your thoughts. Misunderstandings can be frequent as a result. You are keenly sensitive, but not only in a self-centered way – you also pick up subtle emotional cues surrounding others, and this may be the reason that you’re so thoughtful. You are a visionary, and you promote love, harmony, and equality. In love, you are attracted to, or you attract, people who are success-oriented, accomplished, and practical. When an image stayed on an old computer screen for too long, the image would get "burned" into the screen. To prevent this from happening, developers created moving images that would "save" the screen; this is where the term "screensaver" comes from.

READERS INFO
1.
1955 -

On August 27, 1955, the first edition of “The Guinness Book of Records” was published in Great Britain; it quickly proves to be a hit. Now known as the “Guinness World Records” book, the annual publication features a wide range of feats related to humans and animals.

The inspiration for the record book can be traced to November 1951, when Sir Hugh (above) managing director of the Guinness Brewery (founded in Dublin in 1759), was on a hunting trip in Ireland. After failing to shoot a golden plover, Beaver and the members of his hunting party debated whether the creature was Europe’s fastest game bird but were unable to locate a book with the answer. He decided to have one produced. The book was intended to be given away for free in pubs to promote the Guinness brand of beer, however, it turned out to be so popular the company started selling it that and it became a best-seller.

If you take a look at the latest in nouveau cuisine, there is talk about using vegetable ash, especially leek. You char the leek, allow it to completely burn, then powder it and sprinkle it on your food. Well, that may do for some tastes, but I prefer this approach.

You know all those bits you have left over? That half of a bell pepper, and the tops with perfectly good bits? Well, I cut them up and put them on a non-stick cookie sheet, stick them in the oven at 150 degrees, and go to bed. In the morning I have beautifully dehydrated bits that are crisp and tasty, ready to munch as a wee side in box lunches, or powder and sprinkle on top of food (instead of ash). So yum.

Ash

But be warned! While bell peppers retain their sweetness, tomatoes can be quite acidic, and green onions, well, don’t they get bitter at being dehydrated. I can’t say about leek…I love it too much to have any leftover to char.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Clivia miniata (also known as Kaffir lily) is a species of clivia. It grows in dry, shady areas, and tends to flower red or orange. It contains small amounts of lycorine, making it poisonous.

Trailblazer

A large firefly larva, about 8 centimetres (more than 3 inches) long, emitting continuous glow from four light organs at its rear. Fireflies spend most of their lives as larvae, feeding mainly on slugs and snails. This one can even tackle invasive African land snails many times its own size. Its glow – the result of a chemical reaction in its light organs – is most likely a warning to predators that it is unpalatable (whereas, the flashing lights of adult fireflies are for courtship).
