Coast Guard Day - August 4, 2021

 DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Coast Guard Day

Coast Guard Day honors the courageous work of coast guards. When Hurricane Katrina struck the Atlantic coast of America, the US Coast Guardsmen saved over 33,500 lives, an estimated 24,000 of these were rescued from peril in severely dangerous conditions.

In America, there are thousands of events nation-wide for you to get involved in and show your support. In the UK, although not directly associated with HM Coast Guard, the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) are a charity organisation with the sole aim of rescuing those in distress at sea. They launch over 6500 times a year, and have saved over 134,000 lives since their founding.

Pakistan Coast Guard Day is celebrated on September 8.

May BirthstoneAssociated with Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, the emerald is said to protect lovers from infidelity. And while emeralds are not mined in Ireland, it is known as “The Emerald Isle” thanks to its lush green rolling hills.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Wheat Fields is a series of dozens of paintings by the Dutch

Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh borne out of his

religious studies and sermons, connection to nature,

appreciation of manual laborers and desire to provide a means

of offering comfort to others. This 1888 work, titled Corn

Harvest in Provence, is one of many oil-on-canvas paintings he

created that included them. This harvest scene was painted just

outside Arles, and exemplifies Van Gogh's use of colour in full

brilliance to depict the "burning brightness of the heat wave".

The painting is in the collection of the Israel Museum in

Jerusalem.

Simple beauty
In a shallow tidal pool, a colorful cluster of detached fronds of egg wrack and bladder wrack form an abstract pattern against white sand. They have been washed off the rocks surrounding Mangersta Sands, on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. The air-filled bladders of these marine algae keep their fronds floating and exposed to light so they can photosynthesise.
