Simplicity Day

DIANE'S CORNER .. Celebrate Simplicity Day

In character, in manner, in style, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

We live in a complicated world, with taxes and devices and every imaginable complication the world can provide. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just take some time to keep things simple? To winnow life down to the bare essentials and hold onto it like the precious thing it is? Simplicity Day encourages you to do just that, to let go of all of life’s complications and live a day… simple.

History of Simplicity Day

Simplicity Day was born out of a need to be free from the complications of the world and to allow ourselves to just be simple. Celebrate life through simplicity by turning off your devices, getting rid of complicated things and just let life be about living for a day.

One of the great conundrums of the modern world is that the more opportunities and options you have the less happy you’re going to be. Some of the happiest people in the world have been determined to be those who live in uncivilized areas concerning themselves only with what they’re going to eat that day and where a good place to sleep is.

We can learn much from them, though few of us would want to go to such extremes. However, we can all benefit from just cutting out the things that make our lives difficult. Simplicity Day is about getting rid of these complications and culling from your life what doesn’t bring you joy.

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, July 12

You are a colorful, likable, and intelligent person, but you are not always well understood, probably due to a somewhat contradictory nature. You have a way with words, possess great wit, and your intuition is very strong. If lacking confidence, you tend to get into a rut; but at your best, you embrace your spontaneity. Your life path is not always easy, but with age and experience, you learn how to avoid worrying excessively about the future. Famous people born today:

1817 Henry David Thoreau, American naturalist and pacifist (Walden Pond), born in Concord, Massachusetts (d. 1862)

1854 George Eastman, American inventor (Kodak camera, founder of the Eastman Kodak Company), born in Waterville, New York (d. 1932)

1904 Pablo Neruda, Chilean poet (Residence on Earth-Nobel 1971), born in Parral, Chile (d. 1973)

1908 Milton Berle 'Uncle Miltie', 'Mr Television', American comedian and TV host (Texaco Star Theater)n), born in NYC, New York (d. 2002)

1920 Pierre Berton, Canadian author (War of 1812), born in Whitehorse, Yukon (d. 2004)

1997 Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest-ever Nobel Prize recipient, born in Mingora, North-West Frontier Province

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

Your brain uses 10 watts of energy to think, and does not feel pain.

Sea Lions have rhythm.  They are the only animal known to be able to clap in beat.

While you sleep you can’t smell anything, even really, really bad or potent smells.

Frederick McKinley Jones received a patent for his creation of air conditioning units on trucks. This important invention helped transport critical food, medicine and blood during World War II, and improved the availability of fresh produce throughout the country. Orphaned at a young age, Jones showed a strong mechanical ability and was a self-taught engineer by the age of 20. He served in the Army during World War I, fixing equipment for the military. A talented engineer, Jones is also credited with the improvement of sound technology that was used in the film industry.

American explorer and archaeologist Roy Chapman Andrews discovered dinosaur eggs (later determined to be Oviraptor eggs) in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. Andrews' expedition also discovered the Protoceratops andrewsi (which was named after him) and a hind leg of what has since been identified as a Shuvuuia (a small feathered dinosaur). He wrote about his many adventures in the book Under a Lucky Star. Andrews was rumored to be the inspiration for the fictional archaeologist Indiana Jones.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

The crested shriketit (Falcunculus frontatus) is a species of

bird endemic to Australia, where it inhabits open eucalypt forest

and woodland. It has a parrot-like beak that is used for stripping

bark off trees in order to access insects and other invertebrates

underneath. Males are larger than females in wing length, weight

and bill-size, and have black throats, while females have olive-

green throats; both sexes have bold black and white markings on

the face. This male crested shriketit was photographed in Dharug

National Park, New South Wales.

Taking Flight

Lake Nakuru, Kenya, before the rising sun had burned off the mist, flamingos and used shade, shadow and silhouette to create drama, rather than emphasising their vivid colors with sunlight- rain during the night, a rapidly clearing sky, enough time for the cold air to form mist over the alkaline waters, and a hyena hunting for young or infirm birds along the far shore of the soda lake. The predator set up a wave of panic, with those closest to it taking flight and those nearest standing alert. Ten minutes later, not only had the whole flock lifted up, but the mist had also burned off, completely changing the scene.

This is hard because it gets you thinking about gender and the ways they're different. You have to think of one word that holds the others. It's easy when you think about it!

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
Words / as slippery as smooth grapes, / words exploding in the light / like dormant seeds waiting / in the vaults of vocabulary, / alive again, and giving life: / once again the heart distills them. -Pablo Neruda, poet, diplomat, Nobel laureate (12 Jul 1904-1973)
