Plastic Free July - July 2, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Plastic Free July

I’m mad keen on recycling because I’m worried about the next generation and where all this waste we’re producing is going. It has to stop. I wash out my plastic containers and recycle envelopes, everything I possibly can.

Cherie Lunghi

Recycling is emphasized everywhere, but there’s not enough holiday to indeed enforce the idea of how easy it is to recycle. When it comes to plastic, plastic has become the number one product people use each day, despite how damaging it is to the environment. Plastic Free July is a holiday dedicated to teaching people about the dangers of plastic and challenges people to avoid plastic for a month. Read more to learn about its history and see how you can get started.

History of Plastic Free July

Beginning with just a handful of participants in Western Australia back in 2011, the holiday idea has since grown into its own independent, non-profit organization and an annual event in over 150 countries. They originally began through the organization Earth Carers, a community that focuses on a wide range of environmental issues in the world and educates people about the consequences of hurting the environment. Their vision, after separating and becoming their own organization, is all about a world without plastic waste, and many people caught on to the message they sent out because of their concerns for plastic waste across the globe.

Hence, Plastic Free July is all about encouraging people to be more aware of their plastic use and creating a cleaner world as a result. People can participate in this holiday by avoiding all products that use plastic products in them throughout the whole month of July. This holiday also helps educate people about the different types of plastics out there and what happens in the recycling system when plastic is introduced. This initiative aims to challenge the material system the world has in place when it comes to its economy, focusing its efforts on a global span as well as a personal one. By reducing how much a person uses, they can make a small difference and help others do the same.

DAILY SQUEEK

If You Were Born Today, July 2:

You have great strength of character and have a gift for seeing the value of things. Although you do have a unique perspective on most matters, you can be very stubborn about seeing only that side to a story. You are a natural leader and often seek to have your way, but you are also quite poised and regal in manner. Learning to compromise is important to your success on a personal level. You are passionate in love. Famous people born today:

1877 Hermann Hesse, German-Swiss novelist and poet (Steppenwolf, Nobel 1946), born in Calw, Württemberg, Germany (d. 1962)

1908 Thurgood Marshall, 1st African American Supreme Court justice (1967-91), born in Baltimore, Maryland (d. 1993)

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

Happy hour is not legal in Ireland. Since 2003, no place in Ireland can lower the price of beer or any alcoholic beverage for certain, specific hours of the day.

One of Ludwig van Beethoven's first jobs was as a court musician. His father had the same job as well.

During a concert in Berlin, Germany in 1988, famed opera singer Luciano Pavarotti gave a record setting 165 curtain calls at the end of the show.

Coronavirus Style by Sylvia, CAN DO Correspondent

After being on the phones for the foodbank all day, I haven’t been able to break away much except to eat a couple of potatoes for lunch, and get my tofu ready for dinner. Sound yucky? Not the way I do tofu. Even my kids ate this while they were growing up, and considering that tofu is only one better than kale in the child’s grand scheme of all things gross, that is saying something.

First I cut the firm tofu up and put it into single-serving-sized snack bags, then fill those up with a mix of soy sauce, Worcestershire, and water. Then I prop them up in the plastic container they came in and shove them into the freezer. This will give them a meatier texture for things like chili.

Before weighting or freezing….

What’s left is tonight’s dinner. I slice it up for ‘dominoes’ and slather them with the mix without the water, put a little plate on top and weigh the tofu down. Soon I will bread the dominoes with seasoned flour and sesame seeds, and fry them up in some oil, and sprinkle the tops with shredded cheddar and green onions.

They really are very good.

Think I will have some carrots steamed with butter, pepper, honey and sweet basil…it makes a tasty dinner. And then I will finish watching The Age Of Innocence on Netflix. I will make the scrub cap I just got a pattern for tomorrow.

And the purpose for the door is?

PICTURES OF THE DAY

The fennec is a small fox found in the desert of Northern Africa. The fennec is the smallest canid, only weighing up to 1.5 kg. The fennec is nocturnal and hunts for rodents, insects, lizards, birds and eggs at night. The fennec is rare and is not often seen. It is often hunted by humans, even though the fox does not cause any harm to human interests.

The tourist tiger trail
Tiger Temple is the colloquial name for Wat Pa Luang Ta Bua Yannasampanno, a Buddhist monastery at Kanchanaburi in Thailand. Its relationship with tigers started in 1999, when the abbot took in a number of injured and orphaned cubs. The monastery then started to breed its tigers. Now it receives hundreds of paying visitors a day wanting to stroke and be photographed with them. Over the years, there has been both positive press for Tiger Temple, including tourism awards and a film, and negative reports that animals are mistreated behind the scenes. This picture shows a male tiger leading tourists back from the tiger-petting arena to the monastery, followed by his two-month-old cubs (an unusual sight, since cubs would normally stay with their mother until at least a year old)

Make Ramen Noodles in a coffee maker for a quick meal.
Put the noodles in the carafe and add the recommended amount of water to the reservoir. Turn on the brewing cycle and leave the noodles in the dispensed hot water for the recommended time. Transfer them to a bowl and stir in the seasonings.
  • You can add the seasonings to the carafe as well, but this makes it hard to get the flavor of Ramen Noodle seasoning out of your coffee pot!
  • Make there isn’t a used coffee filter in the machine before proceeding. You don’t need to add a clean filter.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute. -Thurgood Marshall, US Supreme Court Justice (2 Jul 1908-1993)

OPTICAL ILLUSION
The rotating-tilted-lines illusion and the enigma illusion is both visually arresting and a powerful demonstration of illusory motion from a static pattern.
