International Women's Day - March 8, 2021

 DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Int'l Women's Day

Mother, sisters, wives, girlfriends, and fiancees…what would we ever do without them? Nobody can honestly say we don’t owe an enormous amount to the women in our lives, from the mothers who made us chicken soup when we were sick as children, to the sisters who helped us decide what to wear on our first date, to the wives who somehow manage to juggle both a career and a family, never missing a beat. Women’s Day is all about celebrating these incredible people and showing them how much we love, respect and value them.

This holiday is perhaps especially important in parts of the world where women are still forced to deal with shocking inequality on a daily basis and is meant to raise awareness of the challenges and struggles faced by these women. Women’s Day celebrates women’s history, highlighting key events, milestones, and achievements, and aims to further promote and raise awareness of women’s rights and to achieve equal opportunity status in all walks of life.

History of Women’s Day

It may come as a rather sad surprise that Women’s Day was first celebrated on February 28th, 1909 in New York. Two years later, German socialist Luise Zietz proposed that the holiday become an annually observed one that would celebrate various women’s issues, such as suffrage, so as to promote equal rights for women. The first few Women’s Days were celebrated in a quite different fashion than they are nowadays, with hundreds of demonstrations taking place in Europe. During these demonstrations, women demanded they finally be given both the right to vote and to hold public office.

Employment sex discrimination was also an important issue. In 1917, the Women’s Day demonstrations in Saint Petersburg, Russia, helped initiate the February Revolution, when women marched through the city demanding an end to World War I. This shocked even Leon Trotsky, who, much like other Russian leaders of the day, did not expect the Women’s Day protests to cause that much of a stir. Until 1977, Women’s Day was celebrated mainly in socialist countries. It was only after the United Nations General Assembly’s decision to proclaim March 8th International Women’s Day that the holiday gained worldwide popularity.

Throughout his life, Morris Graves (1910 - 2001) lived in remote settings, drawing inspiration from the close observation of nature and imbuing his subjects—predominately animals and plants— with poetic and symbolic qualities. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Graves pursued this singular artistic vision, deliberately maintaining his distance, both geographically and conceptually, from the contemporary New York art scene despite the sudden acclaim he received after exhibiting at MoMA in 1942.

DAILY SQU-EEK

If You Were Born Today, March 8

You are hard-working, responsible, ambitious, and perhaps a perfectionist in the work you do, and also very personable. Your friends are especially important to you. Although you love companionship and make an amazing friend and partner, you do need time to recharge your emotional batteries, as you easily soak up the moods of those around you, which can be draining at times. You may feel misunderstood in your youth. Famous people born today:

1787 Karl Ferdinand von Graefe, German surgeon who helped create modern plastic surgery, born in Warsaw, Poland (d. 1840)

1841 Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr, US 59th Supreme Court justice (1902-32), born in Boston, Massachusetts (d. 1935)

1977 James Van Der Beek, American actor (Dawson's Creek), born in Cheshire, Connecticut

(Not So) Totally Useless Facts of The Day:

What happens when you cut a starfish up into pieces? Depending on where it has been cut, the starfish will regenerate itself into a whole new starfish. This applies as long as the cut piece is still attached to part of the original central region. A piece cut off the edge will not be able to regenerate itself.

For every billion years it burns, the sun gets about 10% brighter. In 3.5 billion years from today, the sun will be nearly 40% brighter. It will boil Earth's oceans, melt its ice caps and strip all moisture from its atmosphere.

Many countries have the superstition that black cats are bad luck. However, that's not the case everywhere. Scotland and Japan are just 2 of the countries that view black cats as good luck.

Baseball legend Babe Ruth signed a two-year contract with the New York Yankees for $160,000. Ruth's $80,000-a-year salary made him the highest paid baseball player in the country -- by a lot. While the salary may not seem huge by today's standards, under the contract Ruth made more money than President Hoover. When asked if he deserved to be paid more than the president during an economic depression, Ruth was reported to have said, "Why not? I had a better year than he did."

March 9, 1959 -

On March 9, 1959, the first Barbie doll went on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Eleven inches tall, with a waterfall of blond hair, Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the United States with adult features. The woman behind Barbie was Ruth Handler (below), who co-founded Mattel, Inc. with her husband in 1945. After seeing her young daughter ignore her baby dolls to play make-believe with paper dolls of adult women, Handler realized there was an important niche in the market for a toy that allowed little girls to imagine the future. Barbie’s appearance was modeled on a doll named Lilli, based on a German comic strip character.

Pictures of the Day

The natural range of the Marginated Tortoise is southern Greece, from the Peloponnesus to Mount Olympus. They are also found in isolated zones of the Balkans and Italy, with a somewhat broader range in northeastern Sardinia. The primary food for these tortoises are plants from their native Mediterranean region. Early in the morning, they leave their nightly shelter and bask in the sun to raise their body temperature. Then they go in search of food. In captivity, the primary foodstuffs are dandelionsclover and various varieties of lettuce.

Instant Pot (or Slow Cooker) Chili

There is nothing more satisfying than digging into a big bowl of hearty chili. This crowd-pleasing dish is also your ticket to hands-off cooking because you’ll dump the ingredients into your Instant Pot or slow cooker and let it do the rest while you focus on your move.

Chili is such a versatile dish; you can tweak the recipe using what’s leftover in your pantry, from canned goods like a variety of beans, corn, and tomatoes, to frozen ground meat and bell peppers, and fresh ingredients like cheese, onions, sour cream and avocados.

To make a classic chili, you’ll need:

  • 1 pound of extra lean ground beef (ground chicken or turkey work, too)
  • 2 cans of beans of your choice (black, kidney, pinto, white)
  • 1 can of tomato sauce
  • 1 can of diced tomatoes
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced (or garlic powder if you’re in a hurry)
  • A combination of seasonings. We like 2 tablespoons of chili powder, 1 teaspoon of cumin, salt, and freshly ground pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • Optional toppings: sour cream, sliced avocados, shredded cheese, chopped green onions (just use what you have in stock!)

Put all the ingredients into your slow cooker, season and stir to break apart the meat. Then cook on high for three hours or on low for six hours and return to packing. If you’re using an Instant Pot, you’ll need to make a well at the center of the pot, exposing the bottom, to add a half cup of water. Set your Instant Pot to pressure cook for 20 minutes on high, let the pressure release naturally for about five minutes then quickly release the remaining steam.

You’ll know the chili is ready when its delicious aroma takes over your house! Give the chili a good stir again, then ladle generous portions into four bowls. Garnish with your toppings and dig in!

Ezekiel's Bread
There are few recipes as ancient as the Ezekiel Bread, found in the Bible. This bread has been found to be a reliable recipe throughout history.

Ezekiel Bread Recipe

Ezekiel's Bread (Taken from Ezekiel 4:9)

Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt;
Put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself.
You are to eat it during the 390 days you lie on your side.
Weigh out [20] shekels of food to eat each day and eat it at set times.
Also measure out a sixth of a hint of water and drink it at set times.
Eat the food as you would a loaf of barley bread;
Bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement for fuel.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
A word is not a crystal, transparent and unchanging; it is the skin of living thought and changes from day to day as does the air around us. -Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., US Supreme Court Justice (8 Mar 1841-1935)
