Lazy Mom's Day - September 4, 2020

DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate Lazy Mom's Day
Cool Mom GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY
Whether you are a lazy mom, or just aspire to have a day off and become a lazy mom, Lazy Mom’s Day could be right up your street. Even on Mother’s Day, moms across the world cook, clean, and generally work hard to keep their households functioning. On Lazy Mom’s Day, moms are encouraged to relax, take a back seat, and simply be lazy.

Learn about Lazy Mom’s Day

Sleep is like the unicorn—it is rumored to exist, but I doubt I will see any.”
Well, thanks to Lazy Mom’s Day, you can…
There is one job that is a truly full-time position, and this is being a parent. Any mom will attest to the fact that the work of a parent is never done. However, if you do not take some much needed “me time” then you are at the risk of burning out. After all, everyone needs to make sure that they recharge their batteries from time-to-time. This is why it is important to pay attention to Lazy Mom’s Day so that you can have a day whereby you do literally nothing. On this day, you should not be doing any housework! You can do the dishes tomorrow, or better yet, hopefully, you will have someone who can do them for you.
Do you find it difficult to relax? You are not alone. Being able to relax is a skill. Like any skill, some people are going to find it easier to do than others. A lot of people assume that being lazy is a character trait, but this is not the case. It is actually a habit, and it tends to come from another dissatisfaction, for example, a fair of success or failure or the need to be nurtured.
However, relaxation is critical and there are a number of benefits that are associated with it. Relaxing on a regular basis can help to enhance your memory and your sleep. It also lowers anxiety and boosts energy, as well as helping people who suffer from depression or often find themselves feeling stressed.

History of Lazy Mom’s Day

Lazy Mom’s Day has been created to encourage moms from around the world to have a holiday from the drudgery of bathroom cooking, car pools, fishes, laundry, and cooking. Sounds great, right? More and more moms from all around the globe have been embracing this holiday. From having a nice long soak in the bath to binge-watching on television; this is your day to switch off and do something for you.
Not only is Lazy Mom’s Day a great day for moms all around the world to take a break, but it is also a good opportunity for us to recognize moms and all of their hard work. Take the time to message one of your friends and family members and let them know that you admire everything they do. All moms want to hear this from time-to-time, as it can be easy to feel like you are not appreciated when you spend all of your days doing things for other people.

Joke of the Day

Because It's Currency

Inline image
George goes to the Birth Registration Office to register his newborn son.

The man behind the counter asks the name he wants to give to the boy, and the father replies: "Euro."

The man says that such a name is not acceptable, because it's a currency.

"What?" asks George. "There weren't any objections when I called my first two sons Mark and Frank!"

Word of the Day

cock-horse

cock-horse
Illustration: William Wallace Denslow, 1901

MEANING:
adverb: Mounted with a leg on each side.
noun: A hobby horse.

ETYMOLOGY:
From cock (rooster) + horse, perhaps from the strutting of a rooster. Earliest documented use: 1566.

NOTES:
The best-known use of the term is in this nursery rhyme:
Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross,
To see a fine lady upon a white horse;
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
And she shall have music wherever she goes.
As in this nursery rhyme, the term is often used in contexts where a child is riding a hobby horse. The use of the term in today’s usage example though is not as innocent as it sounds. We’ll leave it at that.

USAGE:
“‘Do you want to ride a cock-horse today, Johnny?’ she asked.”

I think this recipe goes back to before my time. I got it in the late 60’s from a friend, who lost it years later, and was so happy I still had it. Get out your toothpicks!
LEMON LOAFInline image

Cake:
3/4 c. butter
1 c. sugar
grated zest of one lemon
2 eggs
1/2 c. milk
1-1/2 c. flour
1-1/2 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
Topping:
1/2 c. sugar
juice of the lemon
For the cake, cream the butter, sugar and zest, then blend in the eggs. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk, then pour into a prepared loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes, until baked through and the edges begin to pull away from the side of the pan. Cool 10 minutes before turning out onto a cake rack.
Meanwhile, let the sugar dissolve in the lemon juice. When the cake is cooled, set it on a piece of aluminum foil and wrap it, leaving the top uncovered. Prick the cake all over with a toothpick, then pour the lemon syrup all over the top of the cake. When the syrup has been absorbed, unwrap it and serve for slicing. It’s very good.

Tibia insulaechorab
Tibia insulaechorab, the Arabian tibia, is a species of
gastropod mollusc in the family Rostellariidae, native to the
western Indian Ocean. It was first described by the German
malacologist Peter Friedrich Röding in 1798, the type locality
being the Red Sea. He included it in the family Strombidae
but this large family was later split and the genus Tibia was
transferred to the family Rostellariidae. This photograph shows
a dorsal view of a T. insulaechorab shell. Growing up to 20 cm
(8 in) long, including the elongated siphonal canal, it is highly
sought after by collectors because of its attractive appearance.

Winner, Winner, (Sheet Pan) Chicken Dinner

chicken-sheetpan-dinner
Relying on your trusty sheet pan  means putting together dinner to feed the whole family in record time. We’re talking 10 minutes of prep before throwing the sheet pan into the oven.
These dinners typically follow a template: a protein, usually chicken breasts or thighs, a starchy vegetable like potatoes or yams, and a green vegetable, like green beans or zucchini. But you can always play around with these combinations depending on what you have in your fridge and what’s most popular with your family members – swap out chicken for salmon and go for carrots, mushrooms, peppers, onions, broccoli or cauliflower for your fill of vegetables. The options are endless!
To spice up your ingredients, turn to your pantry staples. You’ll need olive oil or butter, and garlic powder, salt and pepper as a starting point. Herbs and spices also elevate the dish.
Here’s our go-to sheet pan dinner recipe. You’ll need:
  • 4 chicken breasts, or chicken thighs
  • 1 ½  pounds of baby potatoes, cut in halves
  • 1 pound of green beans
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 1 garlic clove minced, or 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • Optional: seasonings such as paprika or cayenne, and fresh or dried rosemary, thyme or parsley.
On your sheet pan, assemble your potatoes around your chicken, coat the ingredients with the olive oil, and season with salt, pepper, garlic and your spices of choice. Paprika, cayenne, and fresh or dried herbs like rosemary and thyme are most common with sheet pan dinners. You can even brush a mixture of Dijon mustard and maple syrup on your chicken if they’re on hand.
Bake in your preheated oven for 15 minutes, then remove the sheet pan to quickly flip the chicken breasts and potatoes. Add your green beans to the sheet pan and make sure to toss the juices on the pan onto the vegetables before popping the tray back into the oven for another 15 minutes.
You can broil or grill for a final three minutes so the chicken and potatoes are golden and crisp. Remove the sheet pan, garnish with fresh chopped herbs and serve immediately while the pan juices are piping hot. Voila – dinner is served!

CLEVER
With the COVID-19 pandemic and its many scares, life on Earth can be overwhelming to many of us. That’s why it can be refreshing to look somewhere else and the Gemini Observatory recently released something truly exciting to look at—a fascinating picture of Jupiter that is one of the highest-resolution images of the planet taken on Earth.
The scientists behind the Gemini North telescope released the stunning image in their blog post on May 7, 2020. They used a technique called “lucky imaging” and collected thousands of snapshots of Jupiter through the years that they finally merged into a single composite. The sharp details of the planet’s surface are the result of a tedious work process that involved sifting through thousands of photos to find the sharpest ones.

Simple Sheep Shears

Question: I appreciate the simple design of these sheep shears, although I'm sure there are far more efficient methods of cutting wool these days. Can you tell me how old these are and what they're worth?
Answer: Shearing the woolen fleece from sheep is typically an annual chore on farms. Until the invention of machine shears, which operate in a similar manner to hair clippers, these blade shears were the only means of shearing sheep. Blade shears are still made today but are used for limited purposes. Blade shears leave some wool on a sheep, which is more suitable in colder climates. Burgon & Ball Ltd. of Sheffield, England, founded in 1730, is the largest manufacturer of sheep shears in the world, including blade shears. The company's shears were carried in the 1908 Sears Roebuck & Co. catalog and priced at less than $1.50. It's impossible to determine the age of your shears from a photograph. Similar vintage blade shears are usually priced $15 or less.

A Real Racket

Question: These wooden Pancho Gonzales-endorsed rackets would be great for a summer display. Were they made for badminton or tennis? Are rackets like these collectible?
Answer: The Western Sporting Goods Company in Chicago used the J.C. Higgins brand name on baseballs and baseball gloves, which were sold in Sears catalogs. By 1910, the J.C. Higgins trademark was extended to cover footballs and basketballs and, later, tennis equipment. The thickness of the shaft and the Pancho Gonzales facsimile autograph on the throat reveal that these are tennis rackets. Richard "Pancho" Gonzales (1928-1995) was a champion American tennis player. Winner of 17 major singles titles, Gonzales was the No. 1-ranked tennis player in the world from 1952 to 1960, according to the Tennis Hall of Fame. The Gonzales endorsement dates these rackets from the 1950s to 1960s. Gonzales also endorsed Spalding rackets. Wooden rackets from this era sell for $15 to $30 each, when in good condition.

The Value of Vanity

Question: This vanity set shows its age, but its graphics are still lovely. The set includes a mirrored tray, a covered glass jar and hand mirror-- Are any pieces missing? If so, how much more would a complete set be worth than an incomplete one?
Answer: At the turn of the 20th century, these personal items were described as ladies' toilet sets and were packaged in a fancy box that sat atop a woman's dressing table. Less elaborate vanity sets of this design date from the 1930s through the 1950s. A complete set would certainly have included a matching hairbrush and possibly a comb and one or two scent bottles. This ensemble has a powder jar made of pressed glass and what appears to be an enameled cover. It was probably an affordable purchase made at a variety store or department store. Expensive sets have cut-glass jars and sterling-silver covers, brushes and mirrors. Similar partial sets sell at auctions for $20 to $40. Additional matching pieces could increase the value to around $100.
