International Restless Legs Awareness Day - September 23, 2020

 DIANE'S CORNER ...

Celebrate Int'l Restless Legs Awareness Day

Restless Legs Awareness Day aims to promote awareness of this medical condition or syndrome. It is held on the same day each year to coincide with the birth date of Professor Karl-Axel Ekborn (born 23rd September 1907, died 1977). This eminent Swedish neurologist first wrote and described the disease in 1945. Since then, a lot has been learned about its symptoms although (to date) there is no known primary cause. It may be associated with dopamine or blood iron levels.

Characterised by urges to move the legs even when at rest, it can also sometimes occur in the arms. Secondary causes include some medication or other pre-disposing medical conditions.

International Restless Legs Awareness Day aims to increase understanding of RLS and the jerky movements and in some cases distress caused. A cure is still being sought. In 2013, the North Carolina (USA) proclaimed that this day should be observed by all citizens.

Autumnal equinox

Inline image

In the Northern Hemisphere, the moment in time when the Sun stands directly above the equator while crossing from the north to the south is called autumnal equinox (also known as fall equinoxSeptember equinox or southward equinox). It is the moment summer ends and autumn (fall) begins in the Northern Hemisphere (where nearly 90% of the world's population live). For the Southern Hemisphere, it is the vernal equinox (also called spring equinox) as it is the moment winter ends and spring begins.

In the Northern Hemisphere the autumnal equinox occurs every year on September 21 to 23. Occasionally it can also fall on September 21 or 24. The dates given are based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which for practical purposes is equivalent to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). While the autumnal equinox occurs at the same moment in time all over the world, the date and local time differ from place to place depending on the year and a location's time zone. For locations that are ahead of UTC (further east) it may fall on the day after, and for locations that are behind UTC (further west) it may fall on the day before. To find out the exact date and time of the autumnal equinox 2018 in your area use this seasons calculator.

The autumnal equinox is one of four days (two equinoxes and two solstices) throughout the year that mark the beginning of a new season. The other days are the vernal equinox (beginning of spring), the summer solstice (beginning of summer) and the winter solstice (beginning of winter).

The word "equinox" is derived from Latin and means "equal night". On the day of an equinox, day and night are of approximately equal length all over the world, as the Earth's rotational axis is neither tilted away from nor towards the Sun. At all other times the length of day and night will be different.

Don't let the name put you off, this is delicious, and easy to make. Just make up some rice or quinoa to serve with it. And if you don't want to use jackfruit (which is available in tins in the International section at the grocery store) use potatoes or sweet potato cut into 1" cubes. You won't regret it if you like milder curries that don't tear the roof of you mouth off...though if you do, just add some heat! Once you taste this, I am sure you will be cooking all sorts of vegetables this way as a pleasant change from roasted vegetables, the secret for which is below.

Amazingly Delicious & Easy Jackfruit Curry

1 T. olive oil
1 yellow onion, chopped
1 bell pepper, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1" fresh ginger, minced
4 t. curry powder
1 t. cumin, ground
1/2 t. turmeric, ground
1 t. pink salt
1 can crushed tomatoes
1 can coconut milk
1 can jackfruit, drained and rinsed (or 2-1/2 cups raw dice)

Saute onion and bell pepper in oil. When fragrant, add spices and stir them in, then stir in the tomatoes and coconut milk last. I do this for 2 minutes on the InstantPot, but I would give this maybe 12 minutes on medium low, and serve over rice.

I like to serve it garnished with some sev, tiny crispy noodles made with chickpea flour, available at East Indian grocery stores or International section.

Pictures of the Day

Bothrops bilineatus is a highly venomous species of pit viper

found in the Amazon region of South America. A pale green

arboreal species that may reach 1 m (3.3 ft) in length, it is an

important cause of snakebite throughout the entire Amazon

region. It is a nocturnal species, spending the day hidden in

dense vegetation in lowland rainforest, usually in the vicinity of

water. It emerges at night to feed on small mammals, birds,

lizards and frogs, tending to rely on ambush rather than actively

hunting for prey. This B. bilineatus individual was photographed

in an Atlantic Forest preservation area in the state of Bahia in

eastern Brazil.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
The radical novelty of modern science lies precisely in the rejection of the belief ... that the forces which move the stars and atoms are contingent upon the preferences of the human heart. -Walter Lippmann, journalist (23 Sep 1889-1974)

OPTICAL ILLUSION
Left: Isia Leviant’s Enigma - The purple rings appear to fill with rapid illusory motion. When viewing the famous optical illusion painting Enigma by Isia Leviant, many people claim to see motion within the colored circles moving against the black and white striped background.

Right: Look at the center of the above image and notice how the concentric green rings appear to fill with rapid illusory motion, as if millions of tiny and barely visible cars were driving hell-bent for leather around a track. Neuroscientist and engineer Jorge Otero-Millan of the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix created this image as a reinterpretation of Enigma by Léviant, who unknowingly combined the MacKay rays and the BBC wallboard.
