Senior Health & Fitness Day - May 27, 2020

DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate Senior Health & Fitness Day
For Grandma, Grandpa, Granny, Gramps, Nana, Papa, and all our well-loved elders, Senior Health & Fitness Day is a time to explore the many senior-friendly physical activity options and to understand the importance of exercise and nutrition for ongoing health and illness-prevention.
A healthy diet can boost energy and immunity, and regular exercise is necessary to retain bone mass and lower the risk of fractures and to build muscle strength and reduce the risk of falls.
Various community events will be staged on Senior Health & Fitness Day, and seniors are encouraged to attend for health screenings and diet and exercise information sessions.
Low-impact, non-competitive exercise program choices may include stretching, walking and swimming, all designed to increase strength and flexibility. And although Grandma is probably an excellent cook, she may be able to pick up a few healthy tips to make her legendary meals even more delicious and nutritious.

Whales GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY
A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because it was a very large mammal, its throat was very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.
The little girl said, “When I get to Heaven, I will ask Jonah.”
The teacher asked, “What if Jonah went to Hell?”
The little girl replied, “Then you ask him.”

Quick Chick Apricot-Dijon-Glazed Chicken | Martha Stewart Got no time? Heat up 1/4 c. jam or jelly with 1 T. mustard, slather it over your chicken pieces. Or you can use Heinz 57 Sauce mixed in equal parts with honey. Bake at 400° until the juices run clear, about 40 minutes. Turn it after about 20 minutes and brush the other side. You can also do this with chunks of potatoes and carrots at the same time. Tip For Roasted Veggies Roasted Vegetables with Smashed Garlic - Spend With Pennies Cut your potatoes, carrots, celery, whatever into 1-1/2" chunks. Toss in a mix of 2 T. extra-virgin salad oil 1 t. beef broth powder a good sprinkle of Monteal Steak Spice Put into a covered casserole dish and bake at 350° for 30 - 45 minutes. Take the cover off for the last 15 if you like a lightly roasty char. Extending Ground Beef Ground Beef If you want to extend your ground beef like they did back in the 70's, soak 1/2 c. TVP* granules in a cup of hot beef broth with a teaspoon of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce mixed in. When cold, drain it (don't squeeze) and save the liquid to add to a gravy. Mix into 1 lb. of ground beef, then use as usual in your recipe.

Bacteriophage
bacteriophage is a virus that infects and replicates within
bacteria and archaea. Bacteriophages are among the most
common and diverse entities in the biosphere, found wherever
bacteria are present. Early evidence of their existence came
when the English bacteriologist Ernest Hanbury Hankin reported
in 1896 that something in the waters of the Ganges and Yamuna
rivers in India had a marked antibacterial action against cholera,
but was so minute that it could pass through a very fine porcelain
filter. This picture is a transmission electron micrograph at
approximately 200,000× magnification, showing numerous
bacteriophages attached to the exterior of a bacterium's cell wall.

Regrow Vegetable ScrapsInline image

While some plants seem hell-bent on dying (like the ever-trendy fiddle leaf figs), other ones will do anything to keep on growing. In fact, there are several items in your fridge that will keep growing if given the opportunity!

A lot of vegetable scraps will regrow roots and keep on flourishing if planted, allowing you to get more bang for your buck. One of the most common vegetables for this project is romaine lettuce—just give the butt a few inches of water, and it will start sprouting new leaves in a matter of days! You can also do this with celery, bok choy, and scallions.

These veggies all grow back quickly, but if you’re in it for the long haul, you can regrow potatoes, onions, and even pineapples.

Start Some MicrogreensInline image

In addition to a few tomato plants and herbs in your container garden, why not try your hand at growing microgreens, too? Not only do they grow quickly and with minimal effort, but these miniature greens are a delicious addition to salads, sandwiches, and other culinary adventures. To start growing microgreens, grab an old casserole dish, soil, and some vegetable seeds—any variety will work, but beets, peas, and radishes are popular. You’ll want to plant the seeds in a thin layer of soil, then place the dish in a warm, humid location until they germinate. When the little plants sprout, just water, harvest, and repeat!
