Organize Your Home Day - January 14, 2020

DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate Organize Your Home Day
For homes that are sinking under mounds of stuff and people who use every excuse in the book to avoid finishing off those half-done DIY jobs, Organize Your Home Day is the perfect opportunity to get things done.
Organize Your Home Day is an ideal chance to get your home in order and look forward to a brighter, clutter-free future. Most of us admit to letting things slip from time to time when it comes to tidying and cleaning up, but we all know that mounds can soon become mountains.
If your home is steeped in stuff, or you haven’t got around to tackling those half-finished jobs that have been niggling you for months, Organize Your Home Day is exactly what is needed. A chance to tidy up, clear out, and freshen up your home, you may be surprised at what a difference a day’s hard graft can make.
History of Organize Your Home Day
Organize Your Home Day was launched to encourage homeowners to get down to the nitty-gritty and whip their nests into shape. Many of us are guilty of closing doors on cluttered rooms and letting piles of stuff accumulate, even though we know tidying up and decluttering would make us feel better.
A lack of time and energy can make tasks seem unappealing and daunting, but this is a day that changes everything. Bringing a renewed sense of enthusiasm, taking part in this celebration of taking control and getting organized is a perfect opportunity to restore order. A single day can pave the way for weeks and months of content and calm, and it will enable you to fall in love with your home all over again.
Adopting a new way of living at home can make life less stressful and save valuable time when you’re looking for something in a hurry. Getting out of the door in the morning can be tricky enough without having to rush around searching for a sports kit, a lunch box or the spare key. Decluttering will bring rewards for the whole family and make it much easier to stay on top of tidying in the future.

(Not So) Totally Useless Facts of The Day:

Hugh Jackman Collage
Long before he played the X-Men’s Wolverine, and long before he plays P.T. Barnum in the upcoming ‘The Greatest Showman’, Hugh Jackman was a clown. To be exact, he was Coco the Clown. He was Coco the Clown and for $50, he would perform at kids birthday parties. It’s a good thing he can act because he, self-admittedly, was a terrible clown.
“… I remember a six-year-old standing up at a party saying, ‘Mummy this clown is terrible, he doesn’t know any tricks’—and he was right.”
Reflective Chess Pieces
Checkmate is the universal term in chess that means game over. If your opponent calls checkmate, that means you have no possible moves left to play to protect your king. It means, “Next!”, as in next opponent. But the word checkmate actually comes from the Persian phrase ‘Shah Mat’. When translated, Shah Mat means “the King is helpless.”

Bunch of Coins
Next time you are in a restaurant in Richmond, Virginia with a friend, spouse, relative, or significant other, and you are debating who is going to pay for the coffee, DO NOT flip a coin to decide! When it comes to deciding who is paying for coffee in a restaurant, it is illegal in Richmond to flip a coin. So don’t do it. Perhaps they consider it gambling? Perhaps they wish to encourage the use of Rock, Paper, Scissors?
Food for thought… would iT still be considered illegal if you flip a coin to decide who DOESN’T pay for the coffee?

Some people flinch in horror at the thought of snow, and some cities in the southern United States shut down completely when there's a quarter inch of it. Breckenridge, Colorado, loves its snow so much that it has an entire festival devoted to this glorious white powder. Skiers, snowboarders and casual snow lovers don Viking hats in honor of Ullr, the god of winter, while they play in the snow. There's an endless number of things you can do in the snow, and that Viking hat will make it that much more cool.

Rhinogobius flumineus
Rhinogobius flumineus, also known as the lizard goby, is a
species of goby in the Oxudercidae family endemic to Japan,
seen here in HamamatsuShizuoka Prefecture. A small
freshwater fish found in fast-flowing streams, it maintains its
position against the current by gripping a rock with a sucker
formed from two of its fins. The fish's mouth is slightly
asymmetric; dextral (right-sided) fish tend to curve their bodies
to the right as they rest, while sinistral (left-sided) fish tend to
adopt a left-curving posture. The fish are omnivorous, picking
edible items off the stream bed with the side of the mouth, but
dextral and sinistral fish show no preference for which side of
the mouth they use for this purpose.

Flu-Fighting Ginger and Garlic Soup

With the drop in temperature and the cold air spreading germs, many of us are already feeling run down. Maybe some of us are sniffling while others have a sore throat. Oftentimes, these symptoms are not strong enough for us to miss a day at work to rest up, but they are a painful nuisance all the same. Instead of suffering through the day, try cooking this soup recipe which can boost your immune system and relieve your symptoms.

Health Benefits of Garlic

Garlic contains allicin, a compound that is known for anti-microbial, antiviral, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties. It also affects the body by lowering blood pressure, supporting the digestive, circulatory, and immune system.
Garlic can also:
  • regulate high blood pressure,
  • fight allergies,
  • diminish plaque from the arteries,
  • regulate blood sugar levels,
  • expel parasites,
  • reduce inflammation,
  • help prevent weight gain,
  • treat sore throats,
  • and soothe upper respiratory tract infections.

Health Benefits of Garlic

Garlic is a vital source of vitamins and nutrients that can combat cold and flu symptoms. Researchers have conducted a twelve-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, testing the potency of allicin powder on cold symptoms. The results showed that the powder reduced the symptoms by over 50%.

Health Benefits of Ginger

Ginger has been used for centuries to cure colds, fevers, digestive issues, and other conditions. It is also a potent anti-inflammatory, and effective in soothing arthritis. Many studies have proven its effectiveness in treating nausea and vomiting as well. Researchers have proved that ginger contained antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties, which are helpful when curing cold and flu symptoms.

Ingredients:

  • 4 green onions, finely sliced
  • 1/4 cup grated root ginger
  • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely diced
  • 7 cups of chicken broth or stock (or vegetable stock for vegans)
  • 1 finely diced medium-hot chili pepper

Directions:

  1. Place the onions, garlic, and ginger in a large pot and gently saute on low heat for 2 minutes.
  2. Add the stock or broth and bring the soup to the boil.
  3. Gently simmer until all the ingredients are softened.
  4. Add the chopped chili pepper and simmer for 5 minutes before serving with warm, crusty bread
Variations:

  • If you are not a fan of spicy food, swap out the chili pepper for a sprinkling of cinnamon for other health benefits.
  • For a heartier soup, add carrots and butternut squash to the pot. Allow them to simmer until softened and then puree the soup.
  • If you want to turn the cold-fighting benefits of this soup into a full meal, add sliced mushrooms, chopped broccoli, and cubed organic chicken cutlets into the pot. For vegan options, add beans instead of chicken. Add some wild rice or quinoa into the individual bowls and you have an easy and flu-fighting meal!
