Celebrate Houseplant Appreciation Day
Houseplants are a wonderful addition to any home, adding the fresh scent of living earth, the subtle fragrance of your favorite flowers, or just a bit of the outdoors in the indoors. While some people have difficulty being able to sustain these little treasures, it has been shown to be incredibly therapeutic to have this blush of the natural world inside your home.
History of Houseplant Appreciation Day
Houseplant Appreciation Day was established by The Gardener’s Network, establishing an official opportunity to remind people of the benefits of houseplants. Often with the holiday’s fading into the past, our homes lose some of their beauty and joy. This makes Houseplant Appreciation Day the perfect opportunity to brighten up the home with the sharp splash of green of a living plant.
There are so many things that houseplants can help with when it comes to enhancing your life. Aloe Vera grows quite well indoors, and is perfect for minor cuts and bruises, helping to moisturize skin, and healing minor burns. A small herb garden in your window sill can bring the delicious taste of fresh herbs to your meals, while catnip can make your cats happy. Though you may want to grow those someplace they can’t get to them.

Pictures of the day
Harvest is one of a series of paintings by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh depicting country life. It is subtitled Harvest at La Crau, with Montmajour in the Background. A wheat field is shown in the foreground, with farmhouses, ricks, ladders, carts and activities associated with harvest, and in the distance, purple-blue mountains are set against a turquoise sky. The work was painted in oils on canvas in June 1888, with van Gogh writing that he found the landscape at La Crau in Provence to be as "beautiful and endless as the sea". The painting is held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which houses the largest Van Gogh collection in the world, with around 200 paintings, 400 drawings and 700 letters by the artist.

PIGS FLY, AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY REPORTS GOOD NEWS
Most drops are bad—balls, phones, thun thuns. But today we’ve got a good drop to tell you about: a big one in the cancer mortality rate.
A couple of days ago, the American Cancer Society (ACS) reported the U.S. cancer death rate fell 2.2% from 2016 to 2017, the largest single-year drop on record. The rate has declined 29% since 1991, translating to 2.9 million fewer cancer deaths than if rates stayed at their peak.
Experts pointed to two primary factors
First, lung cancer mortality is sledding down an icy hill.
Second, those same advancements have boosted survival rates for advanced melanoma.
Zoom out: Valued at roughly $123 billion, the global cancer drug market is one of the largest and fastest-growing in the healthcare industry. Drugmakers like Roche (the owner of Zelboraf) and Bristol-Myers Squibb (Yervoy) invested heavily to gain a foothold in the ballooning space. We’re seeing the fruits of those investments in the ACS’s report.
We probably should mention...
Scientists and pharma companies haven’t beaten cancer—by a long shot. Cancer is the U.S.’ second-leading cause of death after heart disease. Plus, progress has slowed against colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers. And obesity-related cancer is a growing problem.
Zoom out x2: The cancer rate is measured by deaths per 100,000 people. So while the rate is falling, the overall number of cases and deaths each year isn’t.
