World Lion Day - August 10, 2019

DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate World Lion Day
World Lion Day
World Lion Day aims to raise awareness of the majestic hunter, the ultimate feline, the king of the jungle, the big fluffy kitty of the Serengeti… Hmm, we should have left it at ‘king of the jungle’.

Basically, it’s all about lions, but you’ve probably got that from the name.
This celebration of the animal kingdom’s most beautiful and fearsome creature was founded by Big Cat Rescue, the world’s largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to big cats. August 10th is a day for people to come together from across the world to pay tribute to the mighty lion in as many ways as possible. Though a fun and exciting occasion for all, its foundations are based in a very serious matter: lion numbers have dramatically declined to the point where the species needs to be placed on the endangered list, just like its larger cousin the tiger.
How you celebrate is entirely up to you. You could change your social media profile pictures to a lion for the day, draw a sketch and share it with friends, find out who has the loudest roar, or even get your coworkers to sponsor you to wear a lion jumpsuit to work, then make a donation to Big Cat Rescue’s ongoing mission.

Patti Medaris Culea was raised on a farm in the mid-west surrounded by creative people. An uncle was an original animator for Walt Disney. A cousin painted murals in NYC (one is still at La Guardia Airport). Both her mother and father were artists and saw their daughter carry on the family tradition. She comes to the cloth doll world via the fine arts world. Patti has found those artistic skills have helped her in her designs, books and classes she teaches. Having two daughters also helped her move from painting portraits to making dolls. Patti travels throughout the world spreading the joy of cloth doll making and fiber art journals.

Word of the Day

Godwin’s law

godwins_law

MEANING:
noun: The idea that as a debate progresses, it becomes inevitable that someone would compare another to Hitler or the Nazis.

ETYMOLOGY:
Coined by Mike Godwin (b. 1956). Earliest documented use: 1991.

NOTES:
Lawyers don’t make laws, but a lawyer once did make a “law”. Back when people lived in caves, they used something called the Usenet to engage in discussions with people around the world. These discussions involved passionate arguments and debates on humanity’s deep yearnings and moral dilemmas. Is it pronounced gif or jif? Is Mac better or PC? Does it take one space or two after a period? The Who vs. Led Zeppelin. vi vs. emacs?

A lawyer named Mike Godwin coined an adage that stated: “As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.” Since then Godwin’s law has served as a useful reminder that whenever a comparison to Hitler or Nazis is made, the discussion is over and the one making such comparison loses.

There is, however, an exception. When actual Nazis (or as our president calls them, “very fine people”) are involved in a discussion, invoking Godwin’s law doesn’t mean anything. Godwin himself has started that may times.

USAGE:
“In 2017, neo-Nazis claimed to be offended by the video game Wolfenstein 2, since it had the hero shooting Nazis. If you self-identify as a neo-Nazi, you can’t claim Godwin’s Law when people lump you in with Hitler and the Nazis.”

(Not So) Totally Useless Fact of The Day:

The first mile of concrete pavement was placed in Detroit, Michigan on Woodward Avenue.

Image result for The first mile of concrete pavement was placed in Detroit, Michigan on Woodward Avenue.

The pavement stretched from Six Mile Road to Seven Mile Road and was built in 1909. The cost at the time was $14,000. Roads up to that point – if they were paved at all – had been built with brick, cobblestone, or a material called macadam, which was not much more than stones sprayed with a tar to form some kind of wear resistant surface. Woodward Avenue would later be one of the first street’s to have a painted center-line and electronic traffic signal.

Skokloster Castle
Skokloster Castle is a Swedish Baroque castle built between 1654 and 1676 by the wealthy military commander Carl Gustaf Wrangel, located on a peninsula of Mälaren, a lake between Stockholm and Uppsala. It was designed mainly by Caspar Vogel; other architects involved included Jean de la Vallée and Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. The castle is a monument to the Swedish Age of Greatness, a period in the middle of the 17th century when Sweden expanded to become one of the major powers in Europe. Wrangel's death in 1676 meant that the castle was never truly completed. The castle became a state museum in the 1970s and displays collections of paintings, furniture, textiles and tableware, as well as books and weapons.

Chandelier
An inventive piece that gives an old chandelier a new lease of life by replacing the lights with flower pots. If you want a more exciting way to display the flowers around your house, this might be it.
You can showcase whatever colorful plants you’ve been growing in a way that no-one else has probably ever seen before. Repainting the chandelier in a bright color as well will also help make this a very eye-catching piece.
Wreath
If you’re worried about your house looking the same as everyone else’s, you could always make this wreath yourself.
You could construct the decoration using flower pots from your backyard. This can look really impressive, especially when you’ve got all manner of cute plants growing in the little container. Your front door is sure to stand out from the crowd now.
