DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Pet Day
Pet Day is a chance for those of us who own pets to show them how much we love them. Now, we all can think of the traditional things: a new toy, some tasty treats, or a long walk in the park, maybe a game of fetch, assuming you have a dog!
But, think outside the box and come up with some ideas to celebrate your relationship with your pet. Once you have indulged your own animals with their favorite treats, why not consider donating to a shelter or or other animal welfare organization?
There are so many neglected and unwanted animals waiting for some love and attention. You can donate your time, or you can donate food or other supplies. Every little bit helps. If you don’t already own a pet, what better time to adopt one? A good phrase to keep in mind is “adopt, don’t shop.”
thanks, Sheri (were you looking under my bed???? lol)

How Do Knitting and Crocheting Help Your Mental Health?
How do you deal with problems like anxiety and depression? Some people drown their sorrows in alcohol. Others like to eat sweet treats when they’re feeling down. You may need more strategies beyond drinking or indulging in chocolate-covered everything. As it turns out, knitting or crocheting can be a great strategy for improving your mental health.
Hand Movements Distract Your Brain
Did you ever have distressing thoughts and worries swirling through your mind? And you couldn’t get those troubles off your mind no matter how you tried?
Well, when you’re knitting or crocheting, it’s a lot easier to distract your mind from those negative intrusive thoughts. That’s because the hand movements you’re doing with both hands are so challenging for your brain that they distract you from the bad thoughts. If your hands are crossing over to the other side of your body, it distracts you even more.
It Helps You Feel More in Control in Social Situations
Social situations can give you a feeling of being out of control. After all, other people’s words and behavior affect the way the interactions go. Doing yarn work in social settings can give you back that feeling that you’re in charge.
For one thing, it reduces the pressure to maintain eye contact. Everyone understands that you’re working on a craft and expects you to have your eyes on your hands and your work at least part of the time. As long as you take a moment to greet newcomers or say goodbye when someone leaves, you can knit or crochet quietly, talking and looking up only when you choose.
Repetitive Movements Reduce Anxiety and Elevate Mood
If you think about it, there are a whole lot of repetitive things people do to deal with anxiety. Eating, smoking, rocking, pacing, and drinking are just a few of them. There seems to be some comfort to be found in settling into a rhythmic pace.
Yet, many repetitive activities can lead to poor health. Knitting and crocheting, on the other hand, can give you that sense of calm without causing you to gain weight, ruin your lungs, or develop alcohol dependence, to name a few.
Moving your hands in the same way over and over not only makes you feel calmer, but it can also lift your mood. When you’re doing those repetitive movements, your serotonin level goes up, reducing depression, and your cortisol level goes down, decreasing stress.
It’s Adaptable
Are there some places where you feel more anxious or depressed? Maybe sitting in a busy airport brings on anxiety. Or, perhaps you feel sadder when no one is around. One of the good things about knitting and crocheting is that you can choose a project that’s right for the setting and situation.
If it’s a busy place with a lot of distractions, you can choose a simple project that doesn’t take a lot of concentration. But, if you’re alone with too many negative thoughts in your mind, a more complex project may be better for distracting you.
It Gives You Goals and a Sense of Accomplishment
One element that many mental health issues have in common is low self-esteem. Yarn work gives you a project that results in a physical object that you can use or share with someone. You set goals, work towards them, and create something that wasn’t in the world before. This can improve your self-esteem and help you feel better about yourself. For all these reasons, knitting and crocheting may be more beneficial than you ever imagined.
