Talk Like A Pirate Day - September 19, 2018

DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day

Yo, Ho, Yo, Ho,
It’s “Talk Like A Pirate” Day!
When laptops are benches God gave us for wenches,
And a sail ain’t a low price to pay!
Talk Like A Pirate Day – Tom Smith
Yar harrr! Ahoy there ye lily livered blaggards! It be Talk Like A Pirate Day, and that means it’s time for pillaging and imbibing of rum! Pirates have been all the rage in recent years, and out of that rage came an insane and completely piratical idea. There should be a day dedicated to keeping the piratical language alive, and more importantly the piratical tradition.

History of Talk Like A Pirate Day

It was June 6, 1995, and there was a group of men playing racquetball, and throughout they were shouting encouragement to each other. On this particular day, for reasons unbeknownst to them, they started shouting piratical slang at each other. From there it just kind of took on a life of its own, and they realized by the end of the game that it was necessary that they establish a holiday to celebrate that encouraged the use of such a fine vernacular. The first thing they needed was a date, and it just so happened that the date selected was the birthday of his ex-wife.
For the next seven years they honored this holiday, in relative obscurity, until they happened upon the email address of one Dave Barry, a syndicated columnist and author of a great number of books. He also happened to be hilarious, like any good pirate should be. From there it’s all history, Dave Barry promoted the holiday, and it’s been one amazing year after another as people all over the country celebrate this auspicious holiday.

The Mexico City Earthquake (1985)

At 7:18 AM, an 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Mexican state of Michoacán, releasing more than 1,000 times the energy of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Several hundred miles away in Mexico's capital, Mexico City, the devastation was catastrophic. Official estimates place the death toll at 10,000, but several times that number may have actually perished. Tens of thousands of others were hurt and hundreds of thousands were left homeless.

Emil Zátopek (1922)

Zátopek, the "Czech Locomotive," was a long-distance runner who won three gold medals at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He won gold in the 5,000-m and 10,000-m runs, and he amazingly earned gold yet again after deciding at the last minute to compete in the first marathon of his life. His wife, competing in the javelin toss, added a gold medal to the family collection at the same Olympics. Zátopek's success was likely due to his grueling training methods.

Feast of San Gennaro

San Gennaro, or St. Januarius, fourth-century bishop of Benevento, is the patron saint of Naples, Italy. He was eventually beheaded during the reign of Diocletian, and his body was brought to Naples, along with a vial containing some of his blood. The congealed blood, preserved since that time in the Cathedral of San Gennaro, is claimed to liquefy on the anniversary of his death each year—an event that has drawn crowds to Naples since 1389.

Noble gas
The noble gases are a group of chemical elements with similar properties in the periodic table. The six noble gases that occur naturally are heliumneonargonkryptonxenon, and the radioactive radon. Under standard conditions, the gases are all colorless, odorless, tasteless and nonflammable. The noble gases show extremely low chemical reactivity, and only a few hundred noble gas compounds have been formed. This picture shows a gas discharge tube containing argon.

DIY Calming Vegan Organic Jelly Soaps

This DIY bath Jelly recipe is like a Lush Dupe. This recipe will show you how to make your own bath jelly or jellies. This recipe is for a bath soap that is the texture of jelly. It is NOT edible. These handmade Jelly soaps are like washing with Jello, they are wiggly and wobbly and the kids will hopefully love to wash with them. Any incentive to get them in the shower right?
As you are working with gelatin which sets quickly, make sure you have everything set up before you start, including your soap molds.
I have also made this jelly soap in a large container and then cut it up and popped it into a jar with a spoon and the kids just spooned it on.
The base for this soap is liquid soap, If you are planning on adding your own scents like we have done below (chamomile and lavender) then make sure your base soap is unscented. If your mix is not setting, then re-heat and add more gelatin.
DIY Calming Jelly Soap made with organic, vegan and natural products
Ingredients:
1 cup organic body wash or Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap
2 packets of vege gelatin
1 cup boiling water
1/2 teaspoon liquid vegetable glycerin
1 tablespoon clear alcohol like vodka or gin to prevent mold (optional)
5-10 drops organic lavender essential oil
5-10 drops organic chamomile essential oil
Vegan food coloring
Instructions
1. In a medium bowl, add vege gel
2. Add hot water. Stir to dissolve gel.
3. Add glycerin
4. Add body wash
5. Add vodka or gin (optional)
6. Add lavender essential oil
7. Add chamomile essential oil
8. Add vegan food coloring
9. Give everything a good stir until well combined.
10. Pour mixture into mold and refrigerate for at least two hours
11. Store in an air tight container in the fridge until ready to use. If you don’t keep in the fridge, it will turn mushy!

EYE OPENER

Unnerving Historical Photos

surelyawesome

After World War II Allied solders stood on Hitler’s balcony and made fun of him by holding a finger over their lips as a fake mustache and held their hand up in the air as a mock of the Nazi salute while soldiers below are laughing. The photo is probably not shown much since most people were not in good spirits after WWII since it was a devastating time. It is a funny photograph to see now though.
There was a time when there was no digital technology, and so the movie makers couldn’t easily give the digital effects to their movies that they wanted. But they had to so, what you see in the photograph below is how they used to make things work. It is one of the Indiana Jones movies set, and we still don’t understand that how did they make everything work so smoothly. All we can say is that they were brilliant people!

During World War II Queen Elizabeth served her country. She served as a mechanic as is pictured in this rare photograph of her in uniform leaning against a military vehicle.
A photo taken in the 1990s in Afghanistan reveals that before the Taliban took over women were far more modern.  One is dressed in a modern professional looking dress that falls to about knee length and the other has on a modern striped sweater and a knee length skirt. Before the Taliban seized control women were allowed to dress how they wanted, travel how they wanted and were able to attend school and have careers. It’s not seen by many likely because the Taliban does not want any women in the country to see it and attempt to revert back to that style and dress, education and jobs.
The Mona Lisa’s return photo after World War II is a strange photo to say the least. The painting was wrapped up carefully and boxed up to be sent back to the Louvre museum.
The other co-conspirator of the Lincoln assassination was Lewis Payne, a confederate soldier. The same night Lincoln was killed, Lewis Payne went with a knife to attack Secretary of State William H. Seward. This rare photo of Lewis Payne shows him sitting in Federal custody before his execution.
In a bizarre photograph the drug kingpin Pablo Escobar was photographed standing in front of the gate that surrounds the White House. The photo was taken in the early 1980s. He is standing by his young son who is dressed casually in a t-shirt and black pants, while Escobar has on a white dress shirt, black pants and a watch on his wrist while he rests a hand on his son’s shoulder. It looks like they were taking a trip as any tourist would if they made a stop by the White House, so it may not be seen often because it is just a family photo while on a vacation.
Two mannequins that were used in the atomic bomb tests that were done in Nevada in the 1950s were photographed. The photo is eerie as both mannequins look human like.
