Allan Haines Lockheed (1889)
Though Malcolm and Allan Loughead attended only elementary school, the mechanically gifted brothers built their first airplane in 1913. Malcolm soon left the industry, but Allan persisted. Though several of his aircraft companies failed, his name—with the spelling changed to Lockheed—would eventually be connected to one of the world's largest aerospace manufacturers. |
Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde National Heroes' Day
Citizens of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde have great reverence for Amílcar Cabral (1921–1973), a nationalist leader who was assassinated before he could see his native Guinea-Bissau and nearby Cape Verde achieve independence from Portugal. The two countries settled on January 20 as their National Heroes' Day because it falls on the anniversary of Cabral's murder. A public holiday, National Heroes' Day commemorates the legacies of Cabral and other freedom fighters. Leftist associations have observed the day by holding symposiums on the writings and political theories of Cabral.

If You Were Born Today, January 20
You are a responsible and reliable person who values security but doesn’t always offer it! You have an unusual sense of humor, your own distinct style, and a real flair for handling money as well as for money-making ideas. In your lifetime, one of your biggest lessons is to develop faith in yourself and to trust in your intuition, which is strong and rarely steers you in the wrong direction. While it can take some time for your heart to be captured by another, once it is, you give a lot to the people you trust and love, and sometimes a little too much until you learn to ask that others meet you halfway. Famous people born today: George Burns, Bill Maher, Skeet Ulrich, David Lynch, Evan Peters.

1937-
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was sworn in for his second term in office. FDR's second inauguration was the first inauguration to occur after the passage of the 20th Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Before the amendment, U.S. Presidents had been inaugurated on March 4. The long period between a presidential election and the beginning of their term in office in March was necessary in order for the incoming president to put their personal affairs in order, travel to Washington, D.C. (travel often took much longer when the country was founded), and to organize the incoming administration. However, the extreme economic crises of the Great Depression demonstrated the need for incoming presidents to begin their terms more quickly after the election.
On Jan. 23, 1933, Congress ratified the 20th Amendment, which provided that the outgoing president's and vice president's terms shall end at noon on Jan. 20, and the incoming president's and vice president's terms then begin. FDR's 1937 inauguration was the first inauguration affected.

Boy Scout Handbook
Question: This Boy Scouts of America Handbook for Boys dates to 1935. Although it shows its age, it still has all of its original pages. How much is it worth in its current state? How much would that value increase if it were in mint condition?
Answer: Boy Scouts of America has published the Handbook for Boys since its founding in 1910. Handbooks contain information pertinent to scouting as well as practical topics such as building fires and tying knots. A Boys Scouts of America Handbook for Boys dated 1935 is the third edition, which was published from 1927 to 1940. The third edition features cover art by Norman Rockwell of a profile of a Boy Scout against a background of famous Americans. The 21st printing was published in March 1935 and the 22nd printing in September 1935; each of these printings numbered 100,000 copies. The thick, softbound books are usually found in poor condition and are worth $5 or less. Third-edition copies in excellent condition range in price from $25 to $40.
Victrola
Question: In near-mint condition, this Victrola is a true beauty. I can just imagine listening to jazz records on it in the early part of the 1900s. The piece has its original crank and needle, and the front opens to reveal slanted shelves that look like they are for storing records. How much is the device currently worth on the market?
Answer: The Victor Talking Machine Co., founded in 1901 in Camden, N.J., called its phonographs Victrolas. The company's logo pictured a black-and-white dog named Nipper listening to a Victrola with the caption, "His master's voice." Victor produced more than half a million of the affordable VV-IX model from 1911, when it sold for $50, until 1924, when it cost $75. The serial number indicates this Victrola was made in early 1915. The "slanted shelves" are not for record storage; the sound is projected through the slats. Opening or closing the cabinet doors controls volume. This model was also available in oak, but the mahogany finish was far more popular. VV-IX Victrola phonographs sell fairly often at auctions, usually for $150 to $250.
