thanks for the optical illusions, Tina
A fascinating illustration. Find the seven boys.
This optical illusion from 1887 appeared in an advertisement for children's health care products. What makes this image interesting is how the three heads and sets of arms, and three sets of legs are cleverly positioned so that seven boys are formed. The trick to seeing all seven boys is to adjust your perception of which head and arms go with which pair of legs.

Look steadily, in a good light, for 30 seconds at the "X" in the eye of the skull, and then at a sheet of paper, a wall, the ceiling or elsewhere, and continue your gaze fixedly for another 30 seconds. An amazing ghost-like skull will appear before your eyes. |

History
Edith Wharton (1862)
Born into upper-class American society, Wharton was privately educated. She married a Boston banker in 1885, but as her older husband's mental health deteriorated, she devoted herself to writing. The success of her 1905 novel The House of Mirth established her as a leading writer, but she is perhaps best known for 1911's Ethan Frome, which explores the grimmer possibilities of New England farm life.
Alasitas Fair
Each year on this day, a large marketplace in La Paz, Bolivia, is full of merchants who traditionally call out "Alasitas," an Aymara word meaning "buy from me," to potential buyers of their miniature wares. Shoppers can find tiny replicas of just about every kind of object—cars, houses, foods, furniture, clothes, tools, household goods, and, especially, money—and seek those which represent items they would like to have in the coming year. Presiding over all this downsized commerce is Ekeko, an Aymara god of material wealth, fertility, and good luck.

Once upon a time, Susie and I were neighbors in an apartment building in Brooklyn. We ate dinner together every night (she being a great chef and my last husband was a good cook). I later became the godparent of her chocolate lab (she had had a black lab and would later get a yellow lab), Duncan, as we drove to the breeder together and spent the entire car ride home thinking of names for the dog. By the next day, she had selected a name which is wonderful but wasn't mentioned once in that long car ride! lol

Entitled "All Is Vanity", this certainly is one of the most famous optical illusions of all time. Drawn by Charles Allen Gilbert in 1892, the illustration was not seen by the mass public until 1902 when it appeared in a magazine. It has been published many times and to this day prints of it are still sold.

MARBLE CAVES
Las Cuevas de Mármol (The Marble Caves) sit in the middle of General Carrera Lake, which lies between Chile and Argentina. The tunnels and caves are only reachable by boat. The swooping arches have been formed by more than 6,000 years of water lapping against the rock, and the waters change color depending on the time of year.

Tech support for marriage
The young woman who submitted the tech support message below (about her relationship to her husband) presumably did it as a joke. Then she got a reply that was way too good to keep to herself. The tech support people's love advice was hilarious and genius!
The query:
Dear Tech Support,
Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slowdown in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewelry applications and intimacy, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as: NBA 5.0, NFL 3.0 and Golf 4.1.
Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and House cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do?
Signed, Desperate
==============================================
The response (that came weeks later out of the blue):
Dear Desperate,
First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system. Please enter command: I thought you loved me.html and try to download Tears 6.2. Do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5
However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1. Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Farting and Snoring Loudly Beta version. Whatever you do, DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Mother-In-Law 1.0 as it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.
In addition, please do not attempt to re-install the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0. In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Cooking 3.0.

At first glance, when viewing this picture you will see "The Man in The Moon".
Look at the moon up close and you will find the heads of a man and woman facing each other. Once you see the man and woman, they seem to stand out more when you look at the picture than the face of The Man in the Moon.

This antique advertisement for flour is a topsy-turvy picture; the faces in it can be viewed two different ways. As-is, the picture shows the faces of five little girls. By holding your mouse pointer over the picture, the card will turn upside down. Once it flips, the girls faces become the faces of five strange looking bearded men. |

Depending on how you view this picture, you can see either two children holding a dog, or a skull. If you can't immediately see the image of a skull, back up a few feet. |

To see the ghost of General Grant, use the following directions: Stare at the tiny star located in the center of the face shown above. Keep staring for about 30 seconds. Then immediately look at a blank spot on the wall or at the ceiling. The face of General Grant should appear before you. It will go away after several seconds. |

A heavy beard covers the face of astronaut Walter M. Schirra Jr., Apollo 7 commander, as he looks out the rendezvous window in front of the commander's station on the ninth day of the Apollo 7 mission on October 20, 1968. Apollo 7 was the first Apollo mission to carry a crew, and it made 163 orbits around the Earth in 10 days, setting the stage for Apollo 8, which was heading to the moon.
Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon, entered lunar orbit on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1968. That evening, the astronauts—Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders—held a live broadcast from lunar orbit, in which they showed pictures of the earth and moon as seen from their spacecraft. Said Lovell, "The vast loneliness is awe-inspiring and it makes you realize just what you have back there on Earth." They ended the broadcast with the crew taking turns reading from the book of Genesis.
