May Day - May 1, 2023

DIANE'S CORNER ..
Celebrate May Day

Despite being a holiday with a longstanding tradition, May Day is now mostly celebrated as International Workers’ Day (or Labor Day) since the 19th century in many countries around the world. Every year on May 1st, this holiday is meant to honor the achievements of the labor movement and workers, and to advocate for workers’ rights and fair labor practices. However, long before it became associated with the working classes, May Day was a celebration of nature and the beginning of summer, as the day falls between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, since Roman times.

History of May Day

The origins of May Day can be traced back to ancient pagan celebrations of the arrival of spring with various rituals and festivals, including flower picking, making floral garlands, setting up a maypole and crowning a king or queen of May. An example of this was the ancient Celtic festival of Beltane (“lucky fire”), which involved lighting bonfires, dancing, and feasting. In a similar fashion, the ancient Romans celebrated Floralia, a festival dedicated to the goddess Flora, and the extravagant 30-day Maiouma festival every three years, which honored both the god Dionysus and the goddess Aphrodite.

In medieval Europe, May Day was a popular holiday, celebrated with feasting, dancing, and maypole dancing. Believed to symbolize the fertility of the earth, maypole dancing involved weaving ribbons around a tall pole, often decorated with flowers and greenery. In the 18th century, May Day was observed in the Roman Catholic religion as a day consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and there are several depictions of the Virgin wearing a crown of flowers and portraying her as the “Queen of May.”

Later on, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the original meaning behind May Day was eventually replaced with the workers’ rights and the labor movement due to the “Haymarket Affair,” an event that marked a crucial moment in the history of the labor movement. On May 1st 1886, workers in the United States went on strike to demand an 8-hour workday, which swiftly took over the entire country. However, on May 4th, a bomb exploded at a labor rally in Chicago’s Haymarket Square, killing several people and wounding many others as the police attempted to break up the rally.

In 1889, May 1st was declared as the International Workers’ Day to commemorate the Haymarket Affair and to call for workers’ rights and better working conditions. Today, May Day is celebrated in many countries around the world as a public holiday and a day of protest and activism for workers’ rights and social justice.

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

The first known use of 'OMG' was in a letter written to Winston Churchill in 1917.

The Richter scale was invented in 1935 by Charles Richter. Richter, an American seismologist from Ohio, developed a mathematical formula to compare the strength or magnitude of one earthquake to another. The Richter scale was replaced in 1979 by the Moment Magnitude Scale.

The Snickers chocolate bar is named after a horse. Not just any horse, but the favorite horse of Frank and Ethel Mars, owners of the Mars company. Sadly, the horse passed away shortly before the release of the chocolate bar.

Knee Injections For Osteoarthritis
Steroidal injections in the knee have finally been proven to advance osteoarthritis by narrowing the space between the joints. However, hyaluronic injections strengthen cartilage and thicken the fluid between the joints.

Foods high in hyaluronic acid are organic soy and citrus fruits.

And my personal daily regimen since having a hip replacement 10 years ago includes 1 teaspoon of gelatin in hot beverages or soups, and 1/2 inch of raw turmeric root. My osteoarthritis has progressed very slowly since using this protocol.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Street Musicians at the Door is an oil-on-canvas painting by

the Dutch Golden Age artist Jacob Ochtervelt, painted in Rotterdam

in 1665. It depicts a mother, child and maid from a wealthy family

interacting with two musicians at the door of their house. The musicians

are playing a violin and a hurdy-gurdy. It is an example of an "entrance

hall painting", a genre pioneered by Ochtervelt. The work is now in the

collection of the Saint Louis Art Museum in St. Louis, Missouri.

2 INGREDIENT CREPES

Ingredients
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 12-ounce can sparkling water or seltzer
Yield
Serves: 4-6
Preparation

Place the flour into a large bowl and slowly whisk the water into the flour. Stir until the foam dissipates and the batter is smooth, about 30 seconds.

Heat a good-quality, nonstick pan over high heat until hot. Add 1/3 cup of the batter to the pan and, using a rubber spatula, quickly spread the batter to the sides of the pan. Let the batter cook for about 2 minutes or until the top begins to dry out and the edges start to pull away from the pan. Using your fingers or a rubber spatula, quickly flip the crepe and cook for another 30 seconds.

Stack the crepes between pieces of wax paper as you finish them so they don’t stick together.

Fill them with fresh fruit, jam, ricotta cheese, sautéed apples or chocolate hazelnut spread!

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a report, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you'll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.
