DIANE'S CORNER ..
Embrace the simplicity, ease and accessibility of walking for exercise by participating in National Walking Day!
History of National Walking Day
Walking is an important part of better health and well-being, not only for heart health and physical health, but mental and emotional health as well. National Walking Day got its start in 2007 as a simple way for people to get just a little bit healthier.
The American Heart Association established the day to encourage people to get off the couch, get out there and participate in some easy and accessible physical activity.
Situated in early April, National Walking Day comes after the long, cold winter when many people have found themselves to be less active. But as the spring weather comes and the days get longer, the first Wednesday in April is the perfect time to pick up a new habit of regular walking – or to be encouraged to restart an old one.

WORD OF THE DAY
mononymous
MEANING:adjective: Having or known by a name consisting of only one word.
ETYMOLOGY:From Greek mono- (one) + -nym (name). Earliest documented use: 1852.
NOTES:In the olden times, a person had only one name. Why would you need more than one anyway? As numbers grew, we needed ways to distinguish ourselves.
Which Eric?
The one who lives in a red house: Eric Redhouse.
(As opposed to Eric Musicmaker. Or Eric Bignose.)
My theory is that in modern times the number of names one has is directly proportional to one’s wealth and sophistication. Paris Hilton’s new baby is named Phoenix Barron Hilton Reum. Meanwhile in Africa, each night mothers put children to bed with just one name.
I have only two names. Doing my part in an equitable distribution of names.
PS: On a serious note, there’s no reason to insist that a person should have more than one name. On our website, web forms are designed to accept one name instead of the general tyrannical insistence on the web and in paper forms that one has to have two or more.
USAGE:“The mononymous food critic Curnonsky, known as France’s Prince of Gastronomy.”

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY
Jim Thorpe won gold in the 1912 Summer Olympic games in Stockholm, Sweden. He won two gold medals, in the Pentathlon and the Decathlon. Less than a year later it was discovered that he had played minor league baseball prior to the 1912 games, thus removing his amateur status. He was forced to return his gold medals.
Paper cuts are so painful because paper is rough at a microscopic level. While knives make straight cuts, paper cuts like a saw blade, doing more damage to nerve endings and skin cells.
John F. Kennedy, the 35th US President, never made a dollar while in Government office. During his terms as both a Congressman and then President, JFK donated all of his salary.

PICTURES OF THE DAY
The Great Blue Heron is a wading bird in the heron family, common over most of North and Central America as well as the West Indies and the Galápagos Islands. Great blue herons can be found in a range of habitats, in fresh and saltwater, but always near bodies of water. They feed by using their long legs to wade into the water and then catch fish or frogs with their long bill. The bat-snatcher. Kantemo, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Every evening at sundown in the Cave of the Hanging Snakes, thousands of bats leave for the night's feeding. It is also when hungry rat snakes emerge, dangling from the roof to snatch their prey in midair.

CROCKPOT RECIPE thanks, Anna
Both vegetarian and vegan diets may provide health benefits, including reduced body weight, lower cholesterol levels, and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, it is important for vegetarians and vegans to ensure that they are meeting all of their nutritional requirements.
3 cans of Coke (diet will not work)
1/2 cups brown sugar
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 can diced green chiles
1 small can enchilada sauce
1 cup brown sugar
- Place pork into a Ziploc bag to marinate, pour one can of Coke, and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Marinade for 3 to 4 hours or even overnight. (Both will work.)
- Drain the marinade and put the pork, 1 can Coke, and garlic salt in the crockpot on high for 3 to 4 hours or 6 to 7 hours on low.
- Remove pork from the crockpot and drain the liquid. Shred the pork.
- Mix together in your blender, 1/2 cup of Coke, chilies, enchilada sauce, and 1 cup brown sugar.
- Place shredded pork back in the crockpot, sauce, and heat until the mixture is warmed.

What Habits Are Holding You Back From Success?
Check out these words of wisdom from people who are 100-years-old.
1. Try it all out.
“I’ve done almost everything that I know of: ballet, I’ve done tai chi. I’ve done yoga. I walked 4 miles a day. I stretched and flexed. I wrote the book.”
2. Diversity is key.
“Have lots of people in the house and lots of different kinds of people—young, old, black, white, people from all over the world. People have always energized me.”
3. Stay positive.
“If you’re positive you can get through it OK. When you think negatively, you’re putting poison on your body. Just smile. They say laughter is the best medicine there is.”
4. Absolutely!
“Get a great education. That is something that no one can take away from you.”
5. Just do it!
“I drink the faucet water.”
6. It’s okay to mourn.
“Take time to mourn what you’ve lost.”
7. Get moving!
“I attribute my longevity to a great extent to walking, not being in the back of the car strapped down.”
8. This is good.
“I’m not saying you have to practice one religion or another, or not practice one religion or another… I’m just saying that you should figure out what you believe in and live it completely.”
9. Be satisfied.
“Life is fun. It’s all up to the person. Be satisfied. You don’t have to be ‘happy’ all the time, you need to be satisfied.”
10. You better believe it!
“Have a pet. Life gets lonely sometimes. Pets are reminders of how we’re all living things.”
11. Let’s hope so…
“Most time things will figure themselves out.”
12. We’re all just people.
“Love people. Find something to like about the person—it’s there—because we’re all just people.”
13. Even if it’s a small thing.
“Do one thing each day that is just for you.”
14. It’s not good for you.
“Don’t compare. You’ll never be happy with your life. The grass is always greener…”
15. Go see the world.
“Travel while you’re young and able.
Don’t worry about the money, just make it work. Experience is far more valuable than money will ever be.”
16. You’re in charge.
“Nobody else controls you.”
17. THIS.
“Even if you feel hatred, keep it to yourself. Don’t hurt other people for any reason.”
18. Hey o!
“Fall in love, get married. S** is to be encouraged.”
19. Hmmm…
“Exercise, to me, is totally unnecessary.
I think it’s mostly overrated.”
20. You get what you pay for.
““Invest in quality pieces, they never go out of style.”
21. Do what you gotta do.
“Do what you have to do. Don’t analyze it, just do it.”
22. Curiosity is key.
“It is very important to have a widespread curiosity about life.”
23. Simple as that.
“Have a good wife/husband, two scotches a night, and be easygoing.”
24. Avoid at all costs.
“I never drank, s**ked, or fooled with the weeds, you know, that stuff. And I don’t let anything upset me, especially traffic.”
25. Yup.
“I make myself go out every day, even if it’s only to walk around the block. The key to staying young is to keep moving.”
26. Cheers!
“I take a drink of Scotch every day.
And I feel great afterward.”
27. They’re good for you.
“Take naps every day.”
28. Put that thing away.
“Don’t look at the calendar.
Just keep celebrating every day.”
29. It’s true.
“If you are embarrassed to be dating someone, you should not be dating them.”
30. Always stay active.
“Be active. I do things my way, like skiing when I’m 100. Nobody else does that even if they have energy.
Now THAT is one interesting knitted bedspread!
