Family Day - February 20, 2023

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Family Day

Dedication to family is an important part of everyday life, of course! But sometimes, it can be good to take a day off from all of the other pressures in life and enjoy a day out as a family.

History of National Family Day

Though celebrated in a similar manner to National Family Day that falls in September, this Family Day is celebrated regionally in many of the Canadian provinces in the month of February. It is not a federal holiday, so each province gets to choose how it wants to observe the day.

Getting its start in the province of Alberta in 1990, Family Day was the only statutory holiday celebrated in Canada in the month of February from 1990 until 2007. The day was established with the purpose of bringing relatives together, strengthening family ties and celebrating the importance of family. This is a particularly important time for families that have working parents or school children, allowing them to take time off to enjoy, appreciate, and care for their family members, whether little ones, aging parents or anyone in between.

Because Family Day is always situated on a Monday, that means that families can take advantage of the long weekend and travel to see relatives or just take a weekend away to enjoy each others’ company. Many communities choose to organize special events that can be celebrated over the weekend of Family Day, such as cultural attractions and gastronomic events for citizens as well as for visitors and tourists.

Family Day is not celebrated in all of the regions of Canada, but it is particularly important to those who live in Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. In Nova Scotia and Yukon, different February holidays are celebrated, called Heritage Day. In Manitoba, they celebrate a day called Lou Riel Day and Prince Edward Island has a February holiday referred to as Islander Day.

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY
A laughing epidemic might sound like a made up concept, but it’s real. In 1962, the people of Tanzania (then known as Tanganyika) experienced such a phenomenon. It started with three school girls who started laughing uncontrollably. From there it spread to other classmates and soon enough it spread to other communities. Overall it affected over 1,000 individuals.

It takes about 50 hours of socializing to go from acquaintance to casual friend, An extra 40 hours to become a “real” friend, and 200 hours in total to become a close friend, according to a study from the University of Kansas.

Mosquitoes are known to be many things. One thing they are not is fast. Mosquitoes are known to "top out" at 1.5 miles per hour.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

The Stopića Cave is a limestone cave near Sirogojno, on the slopes of Mount Zlatibor in western Serbia. It has been protected by the state as a natural monument. It is located in the village of Rožanstvo, 19 kilometres (12 mi) from the town of Zlatibor. This photograph shows cascading tufa "bathtubs" filled with water within the cave.

After the big game on Sunday, an army of volunteers with the Food Recovery Network will be on hand to quickly and safely transport tons of leftover food to people in need. They really do mean tons -- the National Football League estimates there could be as much as 140,000 pounds of donatable food and beverages generated by Super Bowl events.

VEGAN/ VEGETARIAN RECIPE thanks, Alice

Both vegetarian and vegan diets may provide health benefits, including reduced body weight, lower cholesterol levels, and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, it is important for vegetarians and vegans to ensure that they are meeting all of their nutritional requirements.

RETRO RECIPE thanks, Ann
FROSTY MELON
1 package (3oz) Jell-O gelatin (any flavor)
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup cold water
1 medium cantaloupe or honeydew melon
1 cup drained fruit or marshmallows
2-3 packages (3oz) cream cheese
2 TBPS milk

Dissolve Jell-O gelatin in boiling water. Add cold water. Chill until very thick. Meanwhile, peel melon, leaving it whole. Cut a slice from one end, scoop out seeds and drain well. Place melon upright in a bowl. Fold fruit or marshmallows into thickened Jell-O and spoon into melon. Replace cut slice and fasten with toothpicks. Chill. Blend cream cheese with enough milk to make smooth and fluffy. Cut a thin slice from melon for a flat bottom. Place on a vintage plate or platter and spread cream cheese over melon. Slice to serve.  Enjoy!

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a rapport, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you’ll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.
