Housing Day - November 18, 2022

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Housing Day

Homelessness is a serious problem, even in what we perhaps foolishly refer to as ‘first world countries’, and Housing Day was established as part of a movement to combat it all over the world. In the US alone there are 643,000 homeless people, and 200,000 in Canada according to a 2008 study, and in many locations homelessness is treated as a criminal problem. Housing Day works to help change this perception, and to provide a home for those who are currently suffering from homelessness.

History of Housing Day

Housing Day first appeared in 1998 with the determination to establish homelessness as a national disaster. The mayors of the largest cities in Canada
a declaration was adopted from the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee to formally recognize homelessness not as a criminal issue, but as the national disaster and threat to the people of Canada it truly is. Like every person in the world, everyone Canadian has a right to a safe home.

There is a common misconception that the majority of the homeless population are those who simply don’t want to work, an idea that has been debunked by statistics. In the US 25% of those who are homeless are those who suffer from mental illness of one variety or another, 13% are those fleeing domestic violence in their homes, choosing life on the streets versus living with their abusers.

Tragically, 12% of them are veterans of their armed forces, largely abandoned by the system once they leave active duty. Even more tragically, of those who live on the streets, 238,000 of them are members of family, many of whom live homeless together either on the road, or in places where those without residences gather, including shelters.

JOKE OF THE DAY
thanks, Tina
Father Murphy was playing golf with a parishioner. On the first hole, he sliced into the rough. The parishioner heard Father Murphy mutter, "Hoover!" under his breath.

On the second hole, the ball went straight into a water hazard. "Hoover!" again, a little louder this time.

On the third hole, a miracle occurred and Father Murphy's drive landed on the green only six inches from the hole! "Praise be to God!"

He carefully lined up the putt, but the ball curved around the hole instead of going in. "HOOVER!"

By this time, the parishioner couldn't withhold his curiosity any longer, and asked the priest, "Why do you say Hoover?"

"It's the biggest dam I know," he replied.

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

There are more hydrogen atoms in a teaspoon of water than there are teaspoons of water in the sea.

There are more ways to arrange a standard 52-card deck than there are atoms in the entire earth. This means every time you shuffle a deck, it’s likely that particular sequence of cards has never been shuffled before!

Just over 25% of all the bones in your body are in your feet. There are 26 bones in each foot making a total of 52 bones in both feet. The total number of bones in the human body is 206.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Nina Simone (February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003) was an American

singer, songwriter, pianist and civil rights activist. Her music spanned

styles including classicaljazzbluesfolkR&Bgospel and popThe

sixth of eight children born to a poor family in Tryon, North Carolina

Simone initially aspired to be a concert pianist. However, after being

denied admission to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia despite

a well-received audition (which she attributed to racism), she started

playing piano at a nightclub in Atlantic City. She changed her name from

her birth name Eunice Waymon to disguise herself from family members,

having chosen to play "the devil's music" or so-called "cocktail piano".

She was told in the nightclub that she would have to sing to her own

accompaniment, which effectively launched her career as a jazz vocalist.

This photograph of Simone was taken in 1965.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Blanket

Foundation Chain: 136+1 turn ch = 137 total. This is based on the Alternate Stitch pattern I used and the length I wanted. You can use any stitch pattern or just a basic stitch like sc, hdc, dc…etc.

Yarn: I used Red Heart Super Saver (7oz). I bought 1 skein of each of the eye color bands. I bought either 6-7 of the green. I usually buy a bit more than needed and return what I don’t use or keep for other projects.

I did 20 rows of green and 16 rows for the color band. Total of 164 rows. This was my preference of size..you can do whatever you would like.

Eye Pattern-(I had to make another blanket with eyes..so I wrote what I did…it may not be perfect..you may have to play around..it’s the best I could do!)

Black Pupils- Chain 4 & join. 12 hdc into ring & join. Leave a tail so you can sew it onto white eye part. Make 8.

White Eye Part:
ROUND 1-Chain 4 & join. 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next st. 4 sc in last at. Do not join. You crochet in the round.

ROUND 2- Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts.

ROUND 3- 2sc in next 3 sts, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sts, sc in next 6 sts.

ROUND 4- 2 hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next 3 sts, sc in next 7 sts.

ROUND 5- hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next 3 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next 3 sts, sc in next 9 sts.

ROUND 6Change to color eye band hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 10 sts, 2 hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 10 sts.

ROUND 7- sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, sl st in next st. Leave long tail to sew on blanket. I usually wrap yarn around the eye 6 times for the length to use for sewing.

Make a total of 8 eyes. Two in each color eye band. Place the eyes where ever you want them to be on the eye color band.

Alternate Stitch
Foundation row: Multiple of 2 plus 1 for turning chain.

Row 1:- Sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch, sc in next ch, dc in next stitch, sc in next stitch,… repeat alternating across the row and ending in sc., turn.

Row 2- Ch 2 & dc into sc, sc into dc, repeat across, turn.

Row 3- Ch 1, sc into dc, dc into sc, repeat across, turn.

Repeat rows 2 & 3 until you get to your length needed. Remember that a sc goes into the dc of previous row and
A dc goes into the sc of the previous row.

VEGAN/ VEGETARIAN RECIPE

Both vegetarian and vegan diets may provide health benefits, including reduced body weight, lower cholesterol levels, and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, it is important for vegetarians and vegans to ensure that they are meeting all of their nutritional requirements.

Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, are spherical and slightly yellow legumes.

One cup (164 grams) of chickpeas provides over 14 grams of protein and 71% of the daily value (DV) for folate. They’re also high in iron, copper, manganese, phosphorus and magnesium (9).

Roasted chickpeas are a delicious vegan snack. You can make your own by tossing canned chickpeas in olive oil and seasonings, spreading them on a baking sheet and baking them for 40 minutes or until crunchy at 450°F (230°C).

"The Earlsfield first appeared in the 1912 spring and summer catalogue, at a list price of $696.50 plus the cost of freight from Winnipeg. By 1916 it was called the Modern Home and the cost had risen to $887.50. The addition of indoor plumbing cost another $150; heating was $90 extra." Western Development Museum.
