Chocolate Day - October 28, 2022

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Chocolate Day

A food that encourages passion, many people would consider chocolate to be a gift to the world. Whether eaten in the form of a chocolate bar, enjoyed as a chocolate beverage or used to bake a variety of desserts, chocolate has a rich history and a bright future!

History of National Chocolate Day

Dating back more than 2000 years, chocolate seems to have originated in the Amazon where the cacao beans are made into a bitter-ish drink. Ancient Mayans and Olmecs of southern Mexico, as well as Aztecs were so enamored by the chocolate drink that some said that it must have come from the gods! Which is why it was likely used as a ceremonial drink at the time.

The name of the tree that produces the beans for making chocolate is Theobroma Cacao which, when translated, means “food of the gods”. It was named by taxonomist Carolus Linneaus who likely named it after the fact that Aztecs considered chocolate to have been something that was given by the gods.

By the time chocolate was discovered by Westerners in the New World and then made its way to Europe in the 1500s, it was something that was reserved for the wealthy and upper classes. It was not only enjoyed by them for taste reasons, but it had been discovered that the cocoa beans also had some health benefits!

Sugar was eventually added to the concoction and, as the product evolved over the next couple of centuries, it went from being only something that was made into a beverage but was developed into the eating chocolate that people enjoy today.

In the 19th century, along with the development of the industrial revolution, new processes came about that offered the opportunity to produce chocolate on a more regular basis. Of course, chocolate companies began cropping up in England, Europe and the United States. Fry & Sons created the world’s first chocolate bar in 1847.

Today, chocolate continues to be a huge industry, with cocoa beans grown in warm climates and exported to chocolate manufacturers all over the globe. Whether it’s the Hershey’s chocolate company in Pennsylvania, the Lindt company in Switzerland, or a smaller local chocolate company, it’s fun to enjoy access to this delicious treat.

Now it’s time to celebrate National Chocolate Day!

Helena Sofia (HeleneSchjerfbeck (July 10, 1862 – January 23, 1946) was a Finnish painter
A modernist painter, she is known for her realist works and self-portraits, and also for her landscapes and still lifes. Throughout her long life, her work changed dramatically beginning with French-influenced realism and plein air painting. It gradually evolved towards portraits and still life paintings. At the beginning of her career she often produced historical paintings, such as the Wounded Warrior in the Snow (1880), At the Door of Linköping Jail in 1600 (1882) and The Death of Wilhelm von Schwerin (1886). Historical paintings were usually the realm of male painters, as was the experimentation with modern influences and French radical naturalism. As a result, her works produced mostly in the 1880s did not receive a favourable reception until later in her life

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

April 11, 1954 is on record as being the most boring day in history. How did it earn that distinction? Scientist William Tunstall-Pedoe was part of a project called True Knowledge. This was a database of more than 300 million facts. From this collection of facts, Tunstall-Pedoe wrote a script that would search all the data and determine what day had the least amount of events. That is how April 11, 1954 became known as the boring day in history.

Owls have such sharp hearing that they can hear a mouse stepping on a twig from 75 feet away.

Contagious yawning is real and is caused by echophenomena, which is the automatic imitation of an action.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

The buff-breasted paradise kingfisher (Tanysiptera sylvia) is a

bird in the tree kingfisher subfamily. It migrates in November from

New Guinea to its breeding grounds in the rainforest of North

Queensland, Australia. Despite its bright colours, the buff-breasted

paradise kingfisher is often difficult to see in the rainforest and is

best located by its distinctive calls.

The buff-breasted paradise kingfisher hunts on the ground and from

the foliage in the middle to lower levels of the forest canopy. It feeds

on phasmids, earthworms, beetles, insect larvae, spiders, skinks and

small frogs, snails and one was observed holding a small tortoise.

The young are fed by both parents.

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a rapport, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you’ll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes. -Desiderius Erasmus, philosopher, humanist, and theologian (28 Oct 1466-1536)

OPTICAL ILLUSION
"No entry for vehicles"
The left image appears to be the standard red no-entry sign while the right one appears to be a yellow one. Actually, they are identical in physical color gradation.
