Family Day - September 26, 2022

DIANE'S CORNER .. Celebrate Family Day

As the name suggests, National Family Day is an event that is intended to allow loved ones to take a respite from their daily lives and spend quality time together. One of the best things about this occasion is that there is no single “requirement” for the activities to be celebrated; National Family Day is flexible as it is relaxing.

Unsurprisingly, this day is held at different times of the year within different parts of the world. Still, the overall intention is the same. As all of us are leading increasingly hectic schedules, this day is intended to give us a bit of leisure time outside of the “hustle and bustle” of our routines.

Some may choose to have a festive meal together while others can instead attend a religious event or simply take a picnic. Either way, this day is one of the best ways to remind us of the importance of family in our lives.

Learn about National Family Day

Think of your family today and every day thereafter, don’t let the busy world of today keep you from showing how much you love and appreciate your family.

Josiah

As the name indicates, National Family Day is a date for us all to pay tribute and honor to our families. Often, we do not appreciate our families as much as we should. This is because we spend so much time with them and we are so used to this that we do not take a step back and reflect on everything that they do for us. National Family Day gives you the opportunity to do this.

Of course, not all families are related by blood. There are step families. There are also families that you have inherited along the way. They may have even done more for you than your own family has ever done. Not all families are created equally, after all. And, this is okay! It is all about celebrating family and what this means to you.

We should all love our families, even if they annoy us at times! After all, families are always there for us. Through the good and the bad, you can always count on your family to be there. Families also love you for who you are, and they support you through everything.

Knowing that you have your family behind you to support you can help you to go for the things that you really want in life. Plus, families provide for their children. It does not matter whether your family had a lot or not, they probably did all that they could to put food on the table and make sure that you had the best life possible. This is something that is definitely worth honoring and paying tribute to, right? If that was not enough, families also raise us to be the best person that we can be.

We all carry a piece of our parents with us wherever we go. It could be your laugh, your courage, your determination, or your kindness; the chances are, some of these qualities have come from your parents or even other members of your family that you look up to. Also, think about all of the great laughs and memories that we have shared with our family members along the way! That thought is enough to make a lot of people smile.

You can use family day to show your parents and other family members just how much they mean to you. There are a number of easy yet meaningful ways that you can do this. It can be as simple as just telling them how you feel. You can also share a fond memory with them, spend time with them, help around the house, or cook them a tasty meal. It is up to you!

History of National Family Day

National Family Day is celebrated all over the world. In fact, in some countries it is celebrated as a public holiday. This includes Songkran in Thailand, as well as in the Australian Capital Territory, Vietnam, Vanuatu, Uruguay, the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona, a number of different Canadian provinces, and in South Africa as well.

WORD OF THE DAY

timeserver

I made an NTP joke once. The timing was perfect. (NTP = Network Time Protocol)

MEANING:
noun:
1. One who makes little effort at work, such as while waiting to retire or find another job.
2. One who changes views to conform to prevailing circumstances.
3. A computer that transmits precise time information on a network.

ETYMOLOGY:
From time, from Old English tima (time) + server, from Latin servire (to serve), from servus (slave). Earliest documented use: 1566.

NOTES:
Imagine a time when a human did the job of giving correct time (what a computer does now). In this job, instead of being a conscientious worker, this person was lackadaisical. What would you call them? A timeserver in more ways than one. A timeserver timeserver.

USAGE:
“He was a timeserver, awaiting the oncoming pension with all the anticipation of a hitchhiker at a truck stop.”
Ian Rankin; A Question of Blood; Orion; 2003.

“You believe in nothing firm or fixed. You are a timeserver.”
Alasdair Gray; Poor Things; Bloomsbury; 1992.

PICTURES OF THE DAY

A pod of hippopotamuses in South Luangwa National ParkZambia, the southernmost of three national parks in the valley of the Luangwa River. Hippo pods generally number up to about 40 individuals. Hippos spend most of their time in shallow water, rarely coming out of that depth. Most hippos that look as though they are floating are in fact standing or lying on the bottom.

CLEVER

It's one of life's little disappointments. You spend five minutes painstakingly trimming the peel from an orange... only to discover the fruit itself is mealy or dry. Next time, get rid of that peel quickly without sacrificing any fruit or getting any pith wedged beneath your fingernails.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
Half of the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm but the harm does not interest them. -T.S. Eliot, poet (26 Sep 1888-1965)
