Pluto Day - February 18, 2022

DIANE'S CORNER .. Celebrate Pluto Day

If you’re like us, you grew up with a solar system that had nine planets in it. You also grew up in world that didn’t teach new math, but that’s a rant for a different day. Then one day they suddenly decided that designating Pluto as a planet was just wrong, and our most distant friend in the solar system suddenly was told he wasn’t good enough for the planet club anymore, and would forever be considered a ‘dwarf planet’. Kind of a consolation prize for those not cool enough for the big planets club. Pluto Day celebrates the discovery of Pluto in 1930, when it was designated as a planet, and that’s how it should have stayed!

History of Pluto Day

The story of how Pluto was discovered actually starts in the 1840’s, when one Urbain Le Verrier determined that there was a planet outside of Uranus, but that planet obviously wasn’t Pluto, it was Neptune. But the same methods by which Neptune was discovered led to another beyond it. You see, Uranus was demonstrating some oddities in its orbit, oddities caused by its nearest, yet undiscovered, neighbor, Neptune. Once they were able to actually observe Neptune, they realized that another planet must be disturbing Uranus’s orbit as well, what they were seeing couldn’t be explained merely by Neptune.

This led to a search for Planet X (an Amazing name that we think Pluto should have kept, but we’re not able to do anything about that, obviously) headed by Percival Lowell. Unfortunately Powell would pass from this mortal coil (and into the hands of Pluto, God of the Dead) before Pluto was discovered… At least, before he would know about it. You see, during their surveys of the deep sky in search of ‘Planet X’, two faint smudges would appear that were later to be revealed to be Pluto.

The actual discovery of Pluto happened in February of 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh. After so many years and so many lives spent searching for it, we think that Pluto deserves to remain a planet, don’t you?

WORD OF THE DAY

gorgonize

MEANING:
verb tr.: To paralyze, petrify, or hypnotize.

ETYMOLOGY:
After Gorgon, any of the three monstrous sisters in Greek mythology: Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa. They had snakes for hair and turned into stone anyone who looked into their eyes (apparently it was OK to objectify people in those days). Earliest documented use: 1609.

USAGE:
“She’d nearly gorgonized him. He shuddered and drained his glass.”
James P. Blaylock; The Last Coin; Ace; 1988.

IDIOM OF THE DAY

What does the saying 'Better late than never' mean?

Meaning: This idiom suggests that doing something late is better than not doing it at all.

Who? who? is still in bed????

(Not So) TOTALLY USELESS FACTS OF THE DAY

Pandas can produce as much as 48 pounds of poop every day. And THIS is why you do not want them as a pet!

"The Lion King" is the best-selling VHS tape of all time.

In the 1990s, scientists grew trees in a sealed biosphere and couldn't figure out why they fell over before maturing. They eventually realized that the perfect growing environment lacked wind, which provides stress and ensures trees grow strong enough to support themselves.

Morning Tonic Plus ... ★★★★★ ♥
This is based partly on Dr. Mandel's Morning Tonic, which relies on the Mediterranean use of lemon juice and olive oil as a tonic, except that he adds raw honey and cinnamon. However, since cinnamon is already in my Golden Milk Mix that I use for arthritis pain, I use that - plus I always add gelatin to support my joints.

Ingredients:
1 T. extra virgin olive oil
1-2 T. raw honey
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1 t. unflavored gelatine powder
2 t. Golden Milk Mix (below)
1 c. hot water

Put all in blender, and drink in the morning on an empty stomach.

For easing arthritis, use another 2 teaspoons of the mix later in the day, in tea, hot milk, or any other warm drink. It is actually warming, tasty and quite addictive.

Golden Milk Mix:
4 T. Cinnamon
4 T. Ginger
4 T. Turmeric
2 t. Black Pepper

If I forget to do this, this is so anti-inflammatory that my joints remind me!

PICTURES OF THE DAY

Wells Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in Wells, Somerset

commenced around 1175 on the site of a late-Roman mausoleum

and an 8th-century abbey church. The cathedral has been described

by the historian John Harvey as Europe's first truly Gothic structure,

lacking the Romanesque work that survives in many other cathedrals.

It is the seat of the bishop of Bath and Wells. This photograph depicts

the interior of Wells Cathedral's chapter house, built by unknown

architects between 1275 and 1310 in the Geometric style of

Decorated Gothic architecture.

Scuba divers

Evolutionary biologists reported that some species of Anolis lizard have adapted to re-breathe exhaled air underwater, using a bubble on their snouts. The trick allows them to stay submerged for more than 15 minutes, hiding from predators.

VEGAN/ VEGETARIAN RECIPE

Both vegetarian and vegan diets may provide health benefits, including reduced body weight, lower cholesterol levels, and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, it is important for vegetarians and vegans to ensure that they are meeting all of their nutritional requirements.

SWEETS RECIPE
thanks, Susan
1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
3 tablespoons honey
2 cups flour
pinch of salt
2 teaspoons dried lavender

In a large bowl of the standard mixer, cream together the butter, sugar, and honey until light and fluffy. Add the flour, salt, and lavender and mix until combined. Place two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment on the counter and divide the dough in half between the sheets. Using the wrap, shape the dough into 2 logs that are approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter.  Shape the logs into squares if desired by pressing gently on the top with a cookie sheet to flatten the log slightly, then turning the log on its side and pressing again. Freeze thirty minutes or refrigerate 2+ hours, or until firm.

Preheat the oven to 325. Remove the dough from the fridge or freezer and slice into 1/4 inch slices. Place 1-2 inches apart on a lightly greased or parchment lined baking sheet. Bake 15-20 minutes, or until light golden brown. Let cool completely before serving.

COOKBOOK FRIDAY
Published by the Canada Starch Company Limited during World War II, this little book contains some good baking recipes. It recommends the use of corn syrup in many recipes, but keep in mind that the Crown and Karo brands the company represented are not the high-fructose corn syrups that many people find alarming. For most of the recipes using corn syrup, you can substitute honey, maple syrup or your favorite liquid sweetener.

You can use 'ice breaker questions' to build a rapport, enabling strangers to engage in back and forth conversion. With a little practice and possibly a beer or two, you’ll be breaking more ice than the Titanic.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
It seems that for success, in science or art, a dash of autism is essential. For success the necessary ingredients may be an ability to turn away from the everyday world, from the simple practical, an ability to rethink a subject with originality so as to create in new untrodden ways. -Hans Asperger, physician (18 Feb 1906-1980)
