Senior Health & Fitness Day - May 26, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Senior Health & Fitness Day

For Grandma, Grandpa, Granny, Gramps, Nana, Papa, and all our well-loved elders, Senior Health & Fitness Day is a time to explore the many senior-friendly physical activity options and to understand the importance of exercise and nutrition for ongoing health and illness-prevention.

A healthy diet can boost energy and immunity, and regular exercise is necessary to retain bone mass and lower the risk of fractures and to build muscle strength and reduce the risk of falls.

Various community events will be staged on Senior Health & Fitness Day, and seniors are encouraged to attend for health screenings and diet and exercise information sessions.

Low-impact, non-competitive exercise program choices may include stretching, walking and swimming, all designed to increase strength and flexibility. And although Grandma is probably an excellent cook, she may be able to pick up a few healthy tips to make her legendary meals even more delicious and nutritious.

(Not So) Totally Useless Facts of The Day:

Spicy is not a taste because it’s not produced by taste buds. It's a pain sensation produced by your nerve receptors.

The sun is actually white, but Earth's atmosphere makes it look yellow.

A cow isn't technically a "cow" until it's had at least one calf.
Until then, it's just a heifer.

Spectacular carousel in China

No safety harness.  No seat belt.  No  seat.  China’s new extreme ride, the tallest carousel and quadruple turning observation deck in the world, is grabbing everyone’s attention.

It is being dubbed the “Flying Kiss.”

It is two giant statues, overlooking a 3,000 ft. cliff - one of a man & the other a woman.

The ride begins with the man & woman bending down to the ground to pick up passengers from a rooftop platform.

Once on board, the giant statues, holding you up on observation decks with one arm, bring you up into the sky for a spectacular view that is unforgettable.

For safety, there is simply a waste-high gate.  You are free to move about during the ride as the carousel turns and rises.

As the pair reach their highest elevation, the two statues ‘kiss.'

TOGETHER ALWAYS

Do not look at me with sorrow,

Simply because I sit alone.

It is a choice I chose to make

To compose the shivers from my bone.

Do not look at this with pity,

As it was what I chose to do.

It was Philips place to be,

I wanted to show that to all of you.

My world of love is shattered,

And my heart is broken in two

But as the people's Queen,

I still have a job to do.

I want to thank you for your kind words.

As I laid my husband to rest

I had 73 wonderful years,

Being married to the best.

So do not look at me with sorrow,

For a choice that I did make.

I chose to sit alone.

For my country's sake.

The seat beside me was my husband's,

It was not an empty space.

His presence sat beside me,

You just couldn't see his face.

Fancy Feathered Friends

Question: These 3-inch-tall owls are marked with "Goebel" and "W Germany," and each one has a unique serial number. What can you tell me about their history and collectability?

Answer: Although Goebel porcelain items are not as collectible as the company's famous Hummel figurines, you'd be wise to hang on to these feathered friends. They were made by W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik of Oeslau, Germany, now Rodental, Germany. Franz Detleff Goebel and his son, William Goebel, founded the company in 1871. Hummel bisque figurines, based on the drawings of Sister Maria Innocentia (Berta) Hummel, a Franciscan nun, were first made by Goebel in 1935 and became popular among U.S. soldiers returning from Europe after World War II. In addition to Hummel figurines, Goebel made items such as animal figures, ashtrays and bookends. The Goebel trademark on your owls, known among collectors as the "missing bee mark," dates these examples to 1979 to 1990. They are readily found on Internet sites priced about $15 apiece.

It's in the Bag

Question: There is no second sack inside this vintage water bag, which makes me wonder if there was originally another bag or if the water was contained by the linen you see here. What can you tell me about the function and age of this interesting item?

Answer: Motor vehicles weren't always as reliable as they are today. High temperatures, especially in the desert, often caused the engine to overheat. Prudent motorists, therefore, carried these bags filled with water for drinking or for use in the radiator, if needed. The self-cooling water bag is designed to keep water cool through the process of evaporation. Made of imported linen, the bags needed to be soaked before filling to swell the fibers, making them watertight. The bags were hung from the radiator, hood ornament or a door handle. The cork cap on this bag is a clue that it dates to the mid-20th century. These water bags are often found on internet sites priced in the $25 to $35 range. Hirsch-Weis Canvas Products became better known as the originators of the White Stag apparel line.
