National Chocolate Mint Day - February 19, 2021

DIANE'S CORNER ..

Celebrate Nat'l Chocolate Mint Day

Chocolate and mint, while it may seem like an unusual combination, has many benefits–not the least of which is its amazing taste! However, many health benefits are also known to come from joining these two tasty treats together.

Not only does chocolate help produce serotonin and dopamine, but the combination of that with mint also makes it an overall healthier candy. That’s because mint is  a powerful and aromatic herb that aids in digestion and freshens the breath.

While it might be surprising that combining an herb that grows so prolifically, with the product of the cacao bean, is so yummy–somehow it just works. So, to celebrate this unique combination, today is Chocolate Mint Day

History of National Chocolate Mint Day

The ancient Greeks and Romans valued mint for its ability to aid in digestion, freshen one’s breath, it’s ability to be used in many different kinds of foods. However, mint-flavored chocolates didn’t occur until the late 19th century when solid chocolate was being manufactured as candy.

Mint combined with chocolate didn’t truly become a popular concept until York Peppermint Patties came to life. When Henry Kessler opened up the York Cone Company during the 1920s, the company manufactured and produced ice cream cones. The world still had to wait a couple of decades until York began to specialize in the mint concoction it is known for today,

It wasn’t until the 1940’s that the ultimate blend of mint and chocolate, the York Peppermint Patty, was created. Mint and chocolate had already existed during this time, but York’s development made the combination a classic–and a popular one at that!

Today, the York Cone Company is now owned by Hershey, and Hershey provides a wide variety of York peppermint patties, with options such as sugar-free, chocolate truffle mints, York peppermint bites, and all kinds of shapes for the various holidays throughout the year.

Even though York may have been the first to become popular for the mix of mint chocolates, others weren’t far behind. In fact, some sources reveal that Huyler’s in New York was one of the first candy companies to mass produce chocolate mint candies.

Now, the combination of mint and chocolate and mint has become a classic – Chocolate Mint Day, sponsored by the US National Confectioners Association, is celebrated every year through various activities, mostly with people buying their favorite brand mint chocolate and eating to their heart’s delight.

FRIDAY'S INTERESTING FACTS
According to Genesis 1:20-22, the chicken came before the egg.

The answer to the age-old question seems to have been finally answered, and it’s come from the last place anyone would think to look – the Bible! In the Book of Genesis, it clearly states that God created all living things, and even goes on to specify that he created all birds and then instructed them to go out and increase in number. How do birds increase in number you may ask? By laying eggs! Now, this theory only holds up if you believe in God, but it’s still a pretty great answer!

In 2011, more than 1 in 3 divorce filings in the US contained the word “Facebook”.

Back in 2011, social networks such as Facebook were taking the world by storm, and many new users of the platform were quite unaware of the true consequences of their online actions. Little did they know that pretty much anything you post online is there to stay, even if you delete it! References to social networks are on the rise when it comes to divorce cases, as well as child custody cases.

Nutella was invented just after WWII ended because chocolate was so expensive.

The availability of chocolate was so low because most of the world’s armies issued a ration of chocolate to their soldiers. The lack of supply led many to try creative new approaches. One such person who sought a solution to the chocolate crisis was Pietro Ferrero. He came up with an idea in 1946 for a spread made of very small amounts of chocolate and plenty of inexpensive hazelnuts. His idea wasn’t actually new, but his formula was, making it much more affordable to regular folk! The final Nutella product was created by his son who pushed the formula to perfection in 1964.

The world record for stuffing drinking straws into your mouth at once is 650.

On August 25, 2018, Nataraj Karate broke the world record for stuffing 650 drinking straws in his mouth at once! Karate broke the world record in Tamil Nadu, India, making him the second Indian in a row to break the world record. In order to break the record, he had to keep the straws in his mouth for at least 10 seconds. This makes the seventeenth time that this record has been broken so far!

Michael Jackson offered to make a Harry Potter musical, but the offer was rejected.

Michael Jackson, like many others around the world, was a bit of a Potterhead. He saw the opportunity to turn the books into a musical and pitched the idea to J.K Rowling. For better or worse, Rowling just didn’t see it as something that would be incredible and rejected it. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Rowling defended her decision, saying she turned down a lot of adaption opportunities, and Michael Jackson’s just so happened to be one of them.
