DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate Shark Awareness Day
Contrary to expectations, the purpose of Shark Awareness Day is not to stand on the beach and shout out warnings to terrified swimmers and surfers, despite the hours of innocent fun that can provide.
It’s true that sharks are impressive hunters and predators, yet the sad fact remains that these magnificent creatures are more threatened by people than we are by sharks. The worldwide demand for shark-fin soup, shark-tooth medallions, and a false sense of security on beaches everywhere, all combine to leave sharks persecuted and endangered, with millions of them being killed each year.
Like top predators in any ecosystem, sharks play an essential role in keeping the seas healthy and productive. Whilst no-one is suggesting we go out and hug a Great White on Shark Awareness Day, it’s the least we can do to respect these wonderful creatures and let them be.

SUNDAY'S INTERESTING FACTS
Until puberty, the larynx of men is similar in size to that of females. From this point, in females, the increase in size is very little compared to that of men. In men, this considerable increase involves various cartilage becoming enlarged including the thyroid cartilage which becomes prominent in the middle line of the neck (the Adams Apple if you will), while the length of the Rima Glottidis is nearly doubled.
There are more than 42,000 ZIP codes in the United States. Once the ZIP code system was put in place, the U.S. Postal Service only required that bulk mailers use the ZIP codes, though they wanted everyone to use them. The Postal Service struggled, in the beginning, to get the general public to start using the zip codes. They eventually more or less decided to give up on convincing adults and instead they created a cartoon character “Mr. ZIP” in order to try to get kids to start using ZIP codes. They figured that the kids would then encourage parents to use the ZIP codes when they saw their parents leaving the ZIP codes out on mail. Further, when the kids grew older, they would teach their kids to use ZIP codes.
The two major components of salt, chloride and sodium ions, are needed by all known living creatures, though in much less quantities than the typical human consumes. Salt is also involved in the process by which your body regulates its water content (fluid balance).
Eyeshine is the visual effect in many vertebral animals and is not to be confused with the red-eye phenomenon. Animals with a tissue layer called Tapetum Lucidum in their eyes will have pupils that appear to glow when a light is shone in to them. This tissue layer acts as a retroreflector, essentially taking the reflected light and reflects it directly back along the lights original path. This effect increases the amount of visible light seen by the animal. Because this re-reflected light matches the path of the original and reflected light, the sharpness and contrast of the image seen by the retina is maintained. This increase in light intensity provides the glowing appearance of the pupils.
Inhaling a gas that is heavier then air, such as xenon, will have the opposite effect of helium and make your voice sound deeper. This, however, is extremely dangerous as gases heavier then air will tend to settle at the bottom of your lungs, thereby not allowing air to enter those spaces, and effectively suffocating you.

The clarinet is a family of woodwind musical instruments, consisting of a single-reed mouthpiece and a straight, cylindrical tube with an almost-cylindrical bore, ending in a flared bell. The instrument has its roots in the early single-reed instruments or hornpipes used in the ancient world. The invention of the modern clarinet is usually attributed to German instrument-maker Johann Christoph Denner, who developed it from a Baroque instrument called the chalumeau around 1700. The instrument became popular in orchestral pieces, including numerous compositions by Mozart; by the time of Beethoven (c. 1800–1820), the clarinet was a standard fixture in the orchestra. The clarinet family includes instruments in many different pitches, the most common of which are the soprano clarinets in B♭, A and C. This picture shows a 22-key B♭ clarinet using the Oehler fingering system, with a 56 mm (2.2 in) diameter barrel. The body of the instrument is made of grenadilla and the keys of silver-plated nickel silver.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
As a general truth, communities prosper and flourish, or droop and decline, in just the degree that they practise or neglect to practise the primary duties of justice and humanity. -William Henry Seward, Secretary of State, Governor, and Senator (16 May 1801-1872)
