DIANE'S CORNER ...
Celebrate Save Your Hearing Day
Save Your Hearing Day is our yearly reminder to turn down the dial and to listen to the birds chirping outside our windows, for a change. Its originator is unknown, but bless our eardrums, he did us a great service, because how would we otherwise have been able to tell teenagers to turn off that noise?
Save Your Hearing Day is best celebrated in peaceful environments, with earmuffs, if need be. There’s a 60:60 rule that everybody should abide by on this day, which says you should listen to your MP3 at 60% of volume capacity for less than 60 minutes a day. It applies to concerts, as well. But if you simply couldn’t resist going to a live rock concert without wearing earplugs, then you should know you’ve been exposed to hours of decibel noise, the equivalent of listening to an ambulance siren for hundreds of minutes. A hearing detox consisting of 16 hours of auricular rest would do wonders for your eardrums, so have it on this day, because everybody else is.

Chien-Shiung Wu (May 31, 1912 – February 16, 1997) was a Chinese-American experimental physicist who made significant contributions in the field of nuclear physics. Wu worked on the Manhattan Project, where she helped develop the process for separating uranium into uranium-235 and uranium-238 isotopes by gaseous diffusion. She is best known for conducting the Wu experiment, which proved that parity is not conserved. This discovery resulted in her colleagues Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen-Ning Yang winning the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics, while Wu herself was awarded the inaugural Wolf Prize in Physics in 1978. Her expertise in experimental physics evoked comparisons to Marie Curie. Her nicknames include the "First Lady of Physics", the "Chinese Madame Curie" and the "Queen of Nuclear Research". This picture, taken in 1963, shows Wu in her laboratory at Columbia University in New York, while she was professor of physics there. The photograph is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution Archives.

CLEVER
REACH FOR THE BICARB -
BICARBONATE OF SODA IS A CLEANING SUPERSTAR, THANKS TO ITS GENTLE ABRASIVE NATURE AND THE FACT IT'S A GREAT NATURAL DEODORIZER.
Use it to:
- Absorb food odors in the fridge. Fill a ramekin with bicarb and leave it to do its magic.
- Clean countertops, stainless steel sinks, microwaves, and cooking utensils. Simply mix into a paste with a little water and scrub.
- Freshen stale-smelling sponges. Mix with water and leave the sponge to soak.
- Deodorize carpets, upholstered furniture and even pet beds. Sprinkle it on, leave for 15 mins and then vacuum up.
- Stop trainers smelling. Sprinkle a little bicarb inside them, then tap it out before your next gym session.
- Remove tarnish from sterling silver. Make up a paste using three parts bicarb to one-part water and apply it with a lint-free cloth or paper towel, then rinse.
