Celebrate Book Lovers Day
From the scent of a rare first edition book found in an old time book collection, to a crisp, fresh book at the local supermarket, the very sight of a book can bring back memories. Reading as a child, enjoying the short stories, the long books and the ability to lose yourself in a story so powerful that at the end your asking yourself where to get the next book in the series. This is for the reader in all of us, the celebration of Book Lovers Day!
History of Book Lovers Day
While the day’s origins may be shrouded in mystery and rumor, the books themselves are not. Started from carving on stone tablets, the book was designed to make portable the writings and drawings of those that could not carry around stone tablets. Originally it was parchment or vellum (calf skin, in case you were wondering) was bound tightly with a wooden cover.
Often the wooden cover was tightly wrapped in leather to prevent the wood from getting wet and had clasps or straps to hold it shut. In the more modern age, printing capabilities made books cheaper, and easier, to print. The printing press, the typewriter, and the computer all had an effect on the market of books.
But more so than most, is the upsurge in electronic devices that can be used to read on. Computers, tablets, and most cell phones now have the ability to read books, making it that much easier to carry around a small library to enjoy no matter where you are.

This Day in History
Nathan Ames Patents His "Revolving Stairs," Now Known as the Escalator (1859)
Although no working model of his design was ever built, Ames is credited with patenting the first escalator. His idea for the "revolving stairs" was largely speculative. It was not until the 1890s that the first working escalator—called the "inclined elevator"—was produced, based on another's designs. It was installed among the amusements at New York's Coney Island but did not remain a novelty for long.
Pamela Lyndon "P. L." Travers (1899)
Australian-born British actress, journalist, and novelist P. L. Travers is best remembered for her series of fictional children's books about the prim, vain, imperious, acerbic, and mysteriously magical nanny Mary Poppins. The books were a great success, and Disney's award-winning 1964 film adaptation made the author even more famous. Travers worked as an adviser on the film, but in the end she was unhappy with it and never allowed anyone related to the production to adapt her work again. |
Bat Flight Breakfast
Carlsbad Caverns in southern New Mexico was proclaimed a national monument in 1923 not only for its geologic formations but for its teeming bat population. Although many visitors to the park witness the bats' spectacular outbound flight at sunset, far fewer witness their return—except those who attend the annual Bat Flight Breakfast. About 400 people arrive at the cave before sunrise on the second Thursday in August and eat sausages and scrambled eggs in their official yellow "bat breakfast hats" while they wait for the bats to return to their roosts.
Should the Moon Be Quarantined?
The moon and the word "astrobiology" don't often appear in the same sentence—even with a handful of government space agencies and private corporations planning crewed forays to the lunar surface for the first time since NASA's Apollo 17 mission in 1972. That ...

DAILY SQU-EEK
If You Were Born Today, August 9
Although your personality is restless, you are at your best when meeting your responsibilities and filling commitments. Self-esteem plummets otherwise. You are hard-working, likable, dependable, and achievement-oriented. Some of you are overachievers. You might often find yourself in the position of managing and taking care of others. You have a very responsible streak and might stay in difficult situations longer than most as a result - watch for over-committing yourself. Because pride and protectiveness can keep you from sharing your worries and concerns with people closest to you, it can be very important for you to find a confidante so that you can share some of your burdens. Making more time for pleasure is also essential to your success. In close relationships, control or imbalance can be issues, but relationships get much better later in life. You are deeply loving and have strong personal magnetism. Famous people born today:
1648 Johann Michael Bach, German composer (In Dulci Jubilo), born in Arnstadt, Germany (d. 1694)

The same design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens as the eagle and double eagle was originally to be used, but this design by Boston sculptor Bela Pratt was chosen instead. QUANG NAM, VIETNAM
The bridge is made of bamboo, build by the people living in the surrounding villages . The villagers use the bridge daily to cross the river to the vegetable field. The vegetables are brought home at the end of the days to prepare for sale on the next day at the village's market place. Their lives are routinely like that everyday.

DIY Calming Vegan Organic Jelly Soaps
This DIY bath Jelly recipe is like a Lush Dupe. This recipe will show you how to make your own bath jelly or jellies. This recipe is for a bath soap that is the texture of jelly. It is NOT edible. These handmade Jelly soaps are like washing with Jello, they are wiggly and wobbly and the kids will hopefully love to wash with them. Any incentive to get them in the shower right?
As you are working with gelatin which sets quickly, make sure you have everything set up before you start, including your soap molds.
I have also made this jelly soap in a large container and then cut it up and popped it into a jar with a spoon and the kids just spooned it on.
The base for this soap is liquid soap, If you are planning on adding your own scents like we have done below (chamomile and lavender) then make sure your base soap is unscented. If your mix is not setting, then re-heat and add more gelatin.
