Apple Day October 21, 2017

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Apple Day
Image result for apple gif
Here’s to thee, old apple tree,
Whence thou mayst bud
And whence thou mayst blow!
And whence thou mayst bear apples enow!
Hats full! Caps full!
Bushel—bushel—sacks full,
And my pockets full too! Huzza!
— South Hams of Devon, 1871
Braeburn, Discovery, Red Jonagold, a million varieties with a million evocative names, and each one more delicious than the last. Every year the orchards spill forth a cavalcade of crimson, gold, and green, and it’s not just the leaves of Autumn. On the heels of this rolling bounty comes the rich smell of apple pies, spicy ciders both alcoholic and not, and all the tastes and smells of this seasonal treat.
Every year the UK gathers for a celebration of the most delicious harvest of the year, and comes together to share the joy and fun of apples. Events range in size from minor to full blown fairs in villages all over the country, where enthusiasts come together to share recipes for juice and cider, advice on how to properly grow their apples, and information on all the apple varieties available.
First made an official event in 1990 in Covent Garden, this event has been celebrated every year and has grown from a local event to one celebrated all over. It has grown from a simple celebration of the apple to a recognition of cultural and genetic diversity in food that should not be allowed to pass from the world.
Start your Apple Day celebration by gobbling down one of any number of delicious apple varieties, and checking out which Apple Day events are going on near your home. You can go and join in on the events and take in the unique varieties that grow in orchards near you.

Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and opened six months after his death, the Guggenheim Museum represents a radical departure from traditional museum design, spiraling upward and outward in a smooth coil of massive, unadorned white concrete. The exhibition space, which consists of a six-story spiral ramp lighted by a glass dome supported by stainless steel, has even been criticized for upstaging the artwork displayed.

Solti was a Hungarian-born British conductor. Not long after making his piano debut at age 12, he decided he wanted to conduct. He returned to piano during WWII and won the 1942 Geneva International Competition. After the war, he began conducting again and led orchestras all over Europe and the US. As director of the Royal Opera House, he made the first full recording of Richard Wagner's Ring cycle, one of history's most celebrated recordings.

Festival of the Black Christ

One legend associated with the observance of this festival in Portobelo, Panama, says that, during a cholera epidemic on the Isthmus, the people discovered a statue of a black Christ and brought it into the church. Within a few days, cholera had completely disappeared from Portobelo, even though it continued to rage elsewhere. The people of Portobelo honor El Jesús Nazarene by carrying the statue in procession on a decorated platform through the city. Pilgrims come from all over Panama, as they have for more than 300 years, to celebrate with folk dancing, music, and songs.

April 2014 lunar eclipse
The total lunar eclipse that occurred in April 2014, as viewed from Charleston, West Virginia. The first of two total lunar eclipses in 2014, it was visible in the Americas and the Pacific Ocean region. Although within the Earth's shadow, the eclipsed moon is lit by sunlight refracted and scattered by the Earth's atmosphere, and more of this light reaches the outer parts of the umbra than the center of it. During this eclipse, the Moon passed south of the center of the umbra, so its southern part was noticeably lighter.

Kamokuna Lava Firehose 25
This past January, a steady stream of lava, called a firehose, suddenly gushed from an underground lava tube at the base of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano and spilled into the Pacific Ocean. As the molten rock met the cooler seawater, steam, sand, and chunks of cooled lava were thrown explosively into the air. The impact of these continual bursts of energy eventually created a crack in the 90-foot sea cliff, which expanded over the course of a week until a section of the cliff broke off entirely and sloughed into the sea.

Man Uses Water To Properly Prepare Bacon

sfglobe

When we first saw this man dump water on these delicious strips of bacon, we were shocked.  However, when we saw the final result, we were absolutely stunned. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't enjoy the taste of bacon. We here at SFG love anything bacon-related, but is there anything we don't know about our beloved swine cuisine?

Inline image

We know bacon comes from a pig, but what part exactly?
Wikipedia explains, "Bacon is prepared from several different cuts of meat. It is usually made from side and back cuts of pork, except in the United States, where it is almost always prepared from pork belly (typically referred to as 'streaky', 'fatty', or 'American style' outside of the US and Canada). The side cut has more meat and less fat than the belly. Bacon may be prepared from either of two distinct back cuts: fatback, which is almost pure fat, and pork loin, which is very lean. Bacon-cured pork loin is known as back bacon."

Here's how to make crispy bacon without overcooking it.

Everyone wants crispy, tender bacon...

but it's easy to end up with dry and crumbly bacon instead.
Luckily, this technique ensures that your bacon will come out with the perfect consistency and the taste to match.

Start out by cooking your bacon in a skillet with just enough water enough water to cover it.

This additional water makes sure that the cooking temperature is low and ensures that your bacon will stay tender by retaining its moisture.

Once your water begins to boil, lower the heat to medium.

Once all the water has simmered away and your pan looks like this, turn the heat down to low and continue cooking until the bacon is crisp and well-browned.

Once it's finished cooking, you're left with absolutely perfect bacon, crisp, tender and savory. Once you've tried this bacon, you'll never cook bacon any other way again.
