Sometimes you find yourself in that most difficult of positions, having to navigate your way through two positions of equal delicacy. Maybe you have to find a way to navigate the desires of two family members in an attempt to please both, perhaps you’re a public official trying to do the same for your constituency. Whatever the case, Thread the Needle Day is a day to show respect and appreciation for those who have to do this every day, and encourages those in this position to continue to try to find the middle way.
Thread the Needle Day obviously came from the concept of attempting to navigate ones way through a narrow aperture, such as that on the head of a needle. It isn’t at all uncommon for us to find ourselves in a difficult place between two friends, where extreme politicking is necessary to find a way to satisfy both without becoming the enemy of both. That’s the two ways threading the needle can go, either you slide through the aperture easily, or you get pricked by the other end. Never an envious place to be.
The term is often used by politicians, to describe that metaphorical struggle that is navigating a path through two opposing ideas held by different parts of their constituency. Have you ever found yourself in a position like this? Dealing with family or friends? If so, tread carefully and continue to work to find that way between. It may be difficult, but it’s always worth it. Not every difficult situation must result in a decision made one way or the other, threading the needle allows you to find a delicate path between the two, and if handled correctly, can stitch them together through their similarities.

History
Bob Dylan Plugs In (1965)
At the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, erstwhile acoustic folk musician Bob Dylan performed with an electric guitar for the first time, marking a major shift in his career. The move did not go over well. Expecting an acoustic set like his two previous ones at Newport, the audience was caught off guard by Dylan's apparent betrayal of the folk genre, and some fans booed him loudly. His first appearance at the festival, in 1963, constituted his premiere national performance.
Thomas Eakins (1844)
Perhaps the greatest American artist of the 19th century, Eakins lived, worked, and taught in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for most of his life. There, he painted The Gross Clinic in 1875. Depicting a surgical operation, it was initially criticized for being too realistic, but it is now seen as his masterpiece. Eakins was an influential art teacher, but his decision to use nude models of both sexes in mixed-gender classes caused an uproar.
Grotto Day
In England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, oysters were not considered the rare delicacy they are today, and the large number of oysters eaten at that time meant there were lots of shells around. On St. James's Day, which was observed on August 5 before the Gregorian, or New Style, Calendar came into use and on July 25 thereafter, children used the shells to construct small decorative grottoes. Sometimes the children begged for pennies as a reward for their efforts. Most of this grotto-building took place in London, and the custom continued up to the 1950s. |

A Creative Calendar from a Retirement Home.
What a fantastic idea!
I’ll just bet they had a ball.
A German Retirement Community did a calendar where seniors amazingly recreated famous movie scenes.
The Contilia Retirement Group in Essen , Germany , made what is probably the best calendar ever with a few of their seniors.
According to German press, 5000 calendars were printed. And they were given out to residents of the Senior Center, along with relatives and staff.
The calendar models were interviewed about the project and said it was a ton of fun to dress up as their favorite actors.
the photos from The Contilia Retirement Group didn't come through and I so wanted to see them!
ReplyDeleteDidn't come through for me, either. I did a search and found this article, where the photos worked:
