Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Emperor Hirohito announced Japan’s acceptance to the Potsdam Declaration and surrendered on 15th August 1945, effectively marking the end of World War II. However, the official surrender ceremony did not occur until over two weeks later, and thus President Truman marked 2nd September as the official V-J Day.
It is estimated that anywhere from 60 to 80 million people died during World War II, on all sides of the conflict. V-J Day should be seen as not only the celebration of the defeat of the tyrannical Japanese government of the time, but also the remembrance of those who lost their lives.

Louis Bonaparte (1778)
Louis was the younger brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, the first Emperor of France. He accompanied Napoleon on the Italian campaign and was his aide-de-camp in Egypt. At Napoleon's insistence, he married Hortense de Beauharnais, but the union did not last. Proclaimed king of Holland in 1806, he was criticized by Napoleon for being too easy on his subjects. His unwillingness to join the Continental System led him into conflict with Napoleon and to eventually flee his kingdom.
Nauvoo Grape Festival
The highlight of the Grape Festival held each year in Nauvoo, Illinois, is the historical pageant known as the Wedding of the Wine and Cheese, celebrating the union of cheese and wine. The festival also includes parades, a grape stomp, and historical tours. In the late 1840s, Nauvoo was occupied by French and German Icarians. The Icarians brought wine-making to the area, and several of their original wine cellars are still used to make the blue cheese that this festival has celebrated for over 50 years. |
Their Masters' Voices: Dogs Understand Tone and Meaning of Words
When you praise a dog, it's listening not just to the words you say but also how you say them. That might not be huge news to dog owners. But now scientists have explored this phenomenon by using an imaging machine to peek inside the brains of 13 dogs.

Illustrator Completes His Illustrations With Everyday Objects
boredpanda
Meet Christoph Niemann - an amazingly talented illustrator, who creates unique drawings featuring everyday objects. You may recognize him from the NY Times, as he works there, but what we really love are his "Sunday Sketches"... Every Sunday he sits down and creates unique, minimal illustrations out of everyday objects then shares the results on Instagram. Each one of his illustrations are like visual experiments based on different object every time.
“I try to let the object dictate where I’m going,” Cristoph Niemann told Bored Panda. “I pick a random object, put it on my desk and then just start staring at it, desperately hoping that somethings clicks. I try to tackle these images with absolutely no plan regarding the end result. I’m searching for an unusual angle that leads to a visual connection that is surprising for me (and the viewer)”
Beware! Even the most innocent looking dust bunny is capable of morphing into a fierce dust dragon. Love Christoph Niemann and his most whimsical imagination always bring a smile!
