Meteor Watch Day JUNE 30, 2015

DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Meteor Watch Day

Today is Meteor Watch Day! A meteor or “shooting star” is the visible streak of light from a heated and glowing meteoroid falling through the Earth’s atmosphere; it is also call a “shooting star”.
Legend has it that if you wished upon a shooting star the wish would come true. It is believed to have originated in Greece, when a Greek astronomer Ptolemy, around AD 127-151, wrote that the Gods occasionally, out of curiosity, peer down at the Earth from between the spheres. When this happened stars sometimes slip through the gap, becoming visible as shooting stars. It was though that because the Gods were already looking at us, they would be more receptive to any wishes we made!
Did you know that these shooting stars are actually very small? The size of the meteoroid can vary the size of a closed fist to the size of a pebble. Thousands of meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere on a daily basis, but very few of them actually reach the surface; but when they do, they are called “meteorites.”
To celebrate Meteor Watch Day, hope for clear skies and spend some time star-gazing. Or why not find out when the next meteor shower is going to take place. Remember if you see a shooting start make a wish, the Gods may answer it.

Einstein Introduces Special Relativity (1905)

In physics, the theory of special relativity generalizes Galileo's principle of relativity—that all uniform motion is relative and that there is no absolute state of rest. Though physicists Hendrik Lorentz and Henri Poincaré had made contributions to the theory already, Einstein provided a radically new interpretation in his 1905 paper "On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies." In it, Einstein redefines the concepts of space and time, etc.

Lena Horne (1917)

An iconic American singer and actress, Horne began dancing at Harlem's Cotton Club as a teen and, with the help of her stunning voice and good looks, was soon singing with popular bands. She went on to record and perform extensively and appeared in a number of musicals and films, including Stormy Weather, whose title song became her signature. Her one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, was hailed as her masterpiece.

As with the novel before it, it told the story of Judah Ben-Hur, a fictional Jewish prince from Jerusalem who is enslaved by the Romans at the beginning of the 1st century and becomes a charioteer and a Christian.

“The Oslo Opera House is a very special place,” writes Wim Uyttenbroeck, who captured this picture in the Norwegian capital. “These three colorful photographers make a nice contrast against the white stone and plate glass of the building. The white clouds in the sky make the picture complete.”

CrockPot Edamame Dip Recipe

Test out this edamame dip---it's reminiscent of hummus. Sort of. But not really.

The Ingredients.

--1 cup shelled edamame, slightly thawed
--2 chopped garlic cloves
--1 T mayonnaise

--1/2 t cumin
--the juice from 2 limes

The Directions.

If your edamame is frost-bitten like mine was, thaw for about 45 seconds in the microwave. Chop or food process the edamame and garlic into tiny chunks. I used my pampered chef chopper-thingy.
Add to the Little Dipper. Add the mayo, cumin, and lime juice. Stir well.

Cover and cook (there isn't a temerature setting on the Little Dipper) for 30-45 minutes, or until heated through.

Serve with pita chips, pita bread, tortilla chips, or corn tortilla triangles.

The Verdict.

This was a very nice snack, it would have been even better if the chips weren't stale. The girls and I
gobbled it up, although it was a bit spicy for them. My garlic cloves were enormous.

I have FOUR bags of frozenedamame, and am glad to have a way to use them in a way we all enjoy.
Four bags. How did that happen?

Teenagers Create Innovative Door Handle That Kills 99.8 Percent of Germs

By Sumitra A couple of teen geniuses from Hong Kong have invented a product that could revolutionize the world of hygiene and infection control. They’ve created a door handle that instantly destroys germs every time it is touched by human hands.
The two kids – 17-year-old Sun Ming (‘Simon’) Wong and 18-year-old King Pong (‘Michael’) Li – are students at Tam Lee Lai Fun Memorial Secondary School, in Tuen Mun, China. They realised that everyday objects such as doorknobs, handrails, shopping cart handles, and counter-tops are breeding grounds for millions of germs, so they set out to explore the possibility of creating self-disinfecting surfaces that remain germ-free all the time.
After considerable research, Simon and Michael found out that titanium dioxide is an amazing bacteria-killer. So they ground the mineral into a very fine powder to use as a coating for the handle. They also discovered that titanium dioxide is more effective when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays. This posed a challenge: sunlight is a natural source of UV rays, but door handles are generally used indoors. So they had to come up with an energy-efficient artificial source of UV rays.
