Celebrate Friendship Day

Grab your phone, jump on your bike, or fire up the Playstation for old time’s sake, it’s Friendship Day! The day of the year where friends from all over the world show appreciation for one another and remind you why they’re your very best bud. Whether you want to send a card, shoot over a text message, create a photo collage on Facebook, or go and see them in person, there is a way for everybody to celebrate Friendship Day. 

Where did Friendship Day originate?

Friendship Day was originally founded by Hallmark in 1919. It was intended to be a day for people to celebrate their friendship by sending each other cards, but by 1940 the market had dried up, and eventually, it died out completely. However, in 1998 Winnie the Pooh was named the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations (believe it or not!), and in April 2011, the United Nations officially recognized 30th July as International Friendship Day; although most countries celebrate on the first Sunday of August! Furthermore, with the rise of social media making us more connected than ever before, Friendship Day hashtags give everyone the chance to get involved no matter where they are in the world.

According to the Friendship Day declaration, we are invited to “observe this day in an appropriate manner, in accordance with the culture and other appropriate circumstances or customs of their local, national and regional communities, including through education and public awareness-raising activities.” 

While this might sound like too much red tape and bureaucracy when it comes to something as all-encompassing as Friendship Day, it is actually something to celebrate. The variety of cultures worldwide means that no one will celebrate this day the same, and that’s a marvelous phenomenon. The power of friendship is an international one that reaches out to all corners and cultures of the globe.

John the Baptist was the subject of at least eight paintings by the Italian Baroque artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.  This work, a brooding, "psychologically interiorized" oil-on- canvas portrait of John the Baptist as a young adult, shows him  without any of his usual symbolic attributes (except for the cross he holds), and is considered by scholars the most radical portrait  of the series. Caravaggio's unusual practice of composing directly  on the canvas without any underpainting, incising salient features with the blunt end of his brush handle, or perhaps with a knife, is evident here particularly on John's left leg. This painting is in the collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City,  Missouri.

Crows Nest: The crows that live in Tokyo use clothes hangers to make nests. In such a large city, there are few trees, so the natural materials that crows need to make their nests are scarce. As a result, the crows occasionally take hangers from the people who live in apartments nearby, and carefully assemble them into nests. The completed nests almost look like works of art based on the theme of recycling.

Ingredients

• 2 flour
• 3/4 cup sugar
• 1 Tbsp baking powder, omit if using self rising flour
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 3/4 to 1 cup milk with a dash of vinegar added
• 1/4 cup oil

Instructions

• Mix all together and pour into muffin tin filling cups by half, or pour into a loaf pan, and have bread.
• Bake at 400°F until golden brown.

BULGUR, CORN, AND GREENS

(Serves 4)

A colorful blend of ingredients, ready in under 25 minutes!

1 cup bulgur
2 cups water
One 10-ounce box frozen corn kernels
1/2 pound greens (kale or collards), rinsed and torn into bite-size pieces 1/2 teaspoon cumin
2 Tablespoons lemon juice

Cook bulgur in water in a large covered pot for 10 minutes over medium heat. Add remaining ingredients. Heat 10 minutes longer, stirring occasionally. Serve warm.
