DIANE'S CORNER ... Celebrate Meteor Watch Day

Today is Meteor Watch Day! A meteor or “shooting star” is the visible streak of light from a heated and glowing meteoroid falling through the Earth’s atmosphere; it is also call a “shooting star”.

Legend has it that if you wished upon a shooting star the wish would come true. It is believed to have originated in Greece, when a Greek astronomer Ptolemy, around AD 127-151, wrote that the Gods occasionally, out of curiosity, peer down at the Earth from between the spheres. When this happened stars sometimes slip through the gap, becoming visible as shooting stars. It was thought that because the Gods were already looking at us, they would be more receptive to any wishes we made!

Did you know that these shooting stars are actually very small? The size of the meteoroid can vary the size of a closed fist to the size of a pebble. Thousands of meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere on a daily basis, but very few of them actually reach the surface; but when they do, they are called “meteorites.”

The Great Blondin Crosses Niagara Falls on Tightrope (1859)

Best known as "The Great Blondin," Jean François Gravelet was a French tightrope walker and acrobat famous for making multiple crossings of Niagara Falls on a tightrope on several occasions. Balancing 160 feet (48 m) above the water on a 1,100-foot (335-m) tightrope, Blondin dazzled crowds by using a different theatrical variation each time he crossed, performing the feat blindfolded, in a sack, pushing a wheelbarrow, on stilts, or carrying a man on his back.

Michael Phelps (1985) Phelps is an American swimmer who has won 16 Olympic medals, 14 of them gold. He started swimming as a child and competed in his first Olympics at 15. A year later, he became the youngest male ever to set a world swimming record, doing so in the 200-meter butterfly. In 2008, he set a record for most gold medals won at a single Olympiad—eight—while setting as many swimming records.

National Basque Festival

This sports-music-dance-barbecue celebration of Basque heritage has been held annually since 1962 in Elko, Nevada. Participants in the festival wear the traditional red, white, and green of the Basque provinces of Spain. The men also wear the traditional Basque beret. The festival begins on Friday with social and exhibition dancing. On Saturday there's a parade of more than 50 floats, and major contests of weightlifting, sheepdog-working, and dancing the native jota. On Sunday, the events wind up with a big barbecue of steak, marinated lamb, and spicy chorizo sausages.

Summer Fruit Crisp Three Ways

Ingredients

Blueberry Filling

6 cups fresh blueberries

6 Tbsp sugar

2 Tbsp all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

2 Tbsp lemon juice

Then choose one of the following recipes for your crumble topping:

Streusel Topping

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon

5 Tbsp butter

Coconut Crumble Topping

3 Tbsp coconut oil

3 Tbsp Earth Balance Buttery Spread or other margarine

1/2 cup flour

1/2 cup flaked coconut

1/2 cup old fashioned oats

1/2 cup chopped nuts

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon

Cereal Crumble Topping

1 cup wheat/raisin bran flakes

1/2 cup oat flakes

1/2 cup chopped nuts

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon

6 Tbsp melted butter (or margarine, coconut oil, etc.)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

First, make your topping. Choose one of the options below.

Then, make the filling. In a bowl, combine the blueberries, sugar, flour, cinnamon and lemon juice and toss the ingredients to distribute them evenly. Place the fruit mixture into a baking dish. Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the top. Bake for about 30 minutes or until the topping is crispy and brown.

Option A: Streusel ToppingCombine the flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. Add the butter in chunks and work it into the dry ingredients with fingertips or a pastry blender until the mixture looks like coarse meal. Set aside.

Option B: Coconut Topping
Melt the coconut oil and buttery spread together, mix and set aside. Place the flour, coconut, oatmeal, nuts, brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and toss ingredients to distribute them evenly. Pour in the melted coconut oil-buttery spread mixture. Mix until the dry the ingredients are completely coated. Place the mixture over the fruit.  

Option C: Cereal Topping
Crush the cereal flakes slightly and put them in a bowl. Add the nuts, brown sugar and cinnamon and toss ingredients to distribute them evenly. Pour in the melted butter. Mix until the dry the ingredients are completely coated. Place the cereal mixture over the fruit.

As you can imagine, crossing two continents and traversing through jungles, mountains, glaciers, and deserts can inevitably lead to some challenges.
